Personal Narrative: Warning Signs Of Alcohol

Decent Essays
Don't get me wrong, now that I think about it, there were plenty of warning signs along the way, but at the time my brain was so dulled with alcohol to be aware of my "spider senses" all the time. For instance, I used to go to one of my favorite bars and drink. It was that type of place where there was a pool table and a few televisions with a selection of sports events showing. At first, I didn't notice it, but after a many visits , I realized it was the same people, "the regulars". I am not judging, but for the experience they seem all one dimensional. Granted, I didn't know them away from the bar, but it seemed that there was no real ambition in their conversations. You had the one guy with all the advice, the old woman trying to re-experience

Drunken Escapades Intoxicated adults are extremely difficult to babysit and keep out of trouble; especially, when they cause troubling situations that affect everyone. I learned this while helping my boyfriend, Drew, watch his father while his mother, Rebecca, was at work for the night. At the beginning of the night, around five in the afternoon, my boyfriend, Drew, and I decided to take his father, Scot, to Jefferson’s for dinner. This seemed like a harmless idea.…

I went to an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting, held Wednesday at the 12 Step Club, located inside the Yard Birds mall, in Chehalis Washington. I had gone down the day earlier in the week to make sure I knew all the logistics, where, when and how long it would take, whether or not it was an open meeting, and so forth. The room was in a shopping complex the size of a small mall (305,00 square feet to be exact), and the room itself looks like it had retained the furniture and paint from when it was originally constructed forty-five years ago. Frankly it looked cold, old and moldy, with bleak, dirty, concrete block walls. The gentleman I talked to had long pony-tailed grey hair down his back, of an age impossible to determine, was washing dishes…

The majority of society has a notion that alcoholism is a disease rather than a choice, however any addictive behavior is started by an individual's willingness to use the substance. “Research has shown that alcoholism is a choice, not a disease, and stripping alcohol abuser of their choice, by applying the disease concept, is a threat to the health of the individual.”(Baldwin,2003). The author argues that fraudulent research has made the disease concept accepted by society in place of calling alcoholism a choice. Baldwin points to a flaw in the research “The surveys he based his conclusions on were from a handpicked group of alcoholics.…

During most of my "drinking career" I never really considered myself an alcoholic. I mean, I functioned in life normally. I had a house, a wife, kids, a job, never in trouble with the law, a faithful church goer, a youth sports coach... etc. I never showed up to functions under the influence, never missed work or important dates because of drinking, I thought I had it under control. Other than being anxious and not feeling so well physically, nobody in the outside world could even tell I had a problem.…

Both of the questions I answered yes to were related. I had been drinking underage and I was found on campus (at the University of South Florida) highly intoxicated. When the officer asked me for my identification I did not have my valid drivers license on me at the time. I informed the officer that I was underage and I did not have my drivers license with me; after which, he contacted a peer to come pick me up from the location they found me and filed a police report on the incident. I had court hearing where the judge gave me twenty-four hours community service and dropped the charges after the community service was completed.…

Yes, I believe not only by the strictest definition, I was an alcoholic but I was over weight. Not saying I was morbidly obese, but going from the military regiment to daily drinking after retirement didn't help at all. I found myself sweating while just sitting and watching television, out of breath after short walks, and unable to get my wedding rind on and off my finger. Not to mention the custom suits I had made, now are custom fit to a body of a much smaller person.…

Beer smells disgusting; I've hated the smell since I was 6. Weekly, my dad would come home from his construction job and spend time with his best friends Budweiser, Bud Light, and Corona. He would guzzle several beers every night. The alcohol was consuming his life, and his addiction was consuming my life too. I hated seeing my father intoxicated because he wasn't the same person drunk, for the alcohol consumed his soul as if a demon possessed him.…

I had permission to drive to the party under the condition that I was to get home early and not joke around in the car. Addiction support meetings have multiple benefits beyond helping a person move toward a healthier, more stable and productive life without the misuse of substances. Historically speaking, in the case of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, the idea that one alcoholic speaking with another is enough of a good start for progress toward recovery. As a matter of fact, that is how it is described in AA literature (Big Book, 2001). Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. Its primary purpose is to help alcoholics stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.…
