Personal Narrative: War Soldier

Some people may think that what I did was heroic. I don’t. I think that what I did was only being human. Well, I guess that’s a matter of opinion. It was May of ‘44, and I sat at the edge of my bunk, listening, and making small talk with my bunkmates. We were fighting for nearly ten hours, and we were going to be sent out of our bunks any minute. While others dressed, I checked my gun, I knew everything was fine, but we were all scared about being sent out again. The last time we were out, Jackson and Green were shot and killed, while Turner was badly wounded and looked as if he were to die any second. He might already be dead. No one slept their assigned five hours sleep. Not when death seemed close. Davis was in the bunk to my left, Peters and Aiello to my right, Pierson in the bed above me, Daniels, Joseph, Parker, and Perez were in the center of the small room, …show more content…
At this point my left shoulder was numb, and entire sleeve drenched in blood. Four medics rushed to us and two of them helped Williams while One helped me and Aiello each. I didn’t notice when I fell but the next thing I knew, I was on by back, and my entire left side being soaked with something sticky. Then, I was out.
The morning I woke up, I found I was in a hospital bed with Williams and Aiello one either side of it.
“Hey guys.” I said trying to also sit up. That only made me feel nauseous, and I sink back down to the bed. They both kept silent, and giving me sad looks. After a minute of this, Aiello said:
“Both of us thank you for coming back for us; risking your life to save ours.” “Your a hero Hassler.” said a voice from the doorway. I saw Sergeant Dylan there, a grim expression on his face. “However, you disobeyed a direct order. That will cause you to be released from the army.” I looked down not wanting to meet his eyes. Suddenly a wave of anger came over

As I stared across the bullet-torn battlefield I wondered how I ended up here; hiding behind a crumbling wall, clutching my gun as though it were a lifeline. How the young kid I'd once been now bore a dirty, camouflage patterned uniform. There I was, contemplating my life in the middle of a battle. I shouldn't have been surprised when a hand suddenly shot out in front of my face and smacked me upside the head. It was so unexpected that I nearly stumbled out from behind the rubble and right into the bullet whizzing by.…

Thoughts of his own wife made him wonder how Jake had ever let Kat get away.…

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…
