Personal Narrative: Waking Up Without A Father

Decent Essays
I remember waking up one morning seeing my mother cry. All I can recall her saying is "your dad left, your dad left". Not knowing what to do at the moment was just a test. Now I look back and tell myself I've passed. Growing up without a father benefitted not only me but my family as a whole. I had both my mother's and sister's back and they returned the favor. We've grown so strong proving that we don't need a father figure to make us a complete family. I have to give him thanks because the man I am today wouldn't be if it weren't for him leaving. I am motivated for greatness. There's one man who has influenced my life positively and his name is Javier Islas. Why you ask? It's a pleasure knowing that someone can offer open arms and accept

Growing up in a single parent household, I have faced many trials and tribulations. One of these trials and tribulations was growing up in a low income family with limited opportunities. I was a bright, productive student, in 9th grade year I tried my hardest, even in math and science, to make my freshman year the best and most productive; I got good grades, joined the track team and got a job. But then during my 10th through 11th grade years I began to experience verbal and mental abuse at the hand of a family member. At one point I had run away from home to get away from my problems.…

Chances are you may know a deadbeat father. He may pay child support, as in the case of my son’s father but doesn’t care to help raise the child or make himself known in that child’s life. The crippled youth hobbled out of the sandbox, weather beaten and trying not to splash rain on his shoes, shoes that were given him on a clothes drive for the needy. He knelt on the school yard to wrap his knee, but it wasn't the cuts or bruises bothering him, it was the beating he'd taken on Tuesday from the town bully. It was better than facing an out of work father: his son was taught to fight, club foot or not. He raised a fist and called for the bully to come out of the library, a coward that couldn't believe that the Mexican wanted more The dirty faced bully had friends with him and one of them was holding a baseball bat.…

After a week had passed since my step daddy’s arrest, he and I still hadn’t found any meaningful work yet. And instead of looking for work like I had done every day so far, my step daddy just spent most of his day on the couch drinking beers purchased with what little money we had left in savings. Money which I’m sure was already earmarked for keeping the lights on or the water flowing. As he self-loathed while getting drunk, he would sulk to anyone who would lend him a sympathetic ear and gripe about how crummy his life was and how the world conspired against him. I thought it was really quite pathetic to watch a grown man act that way.…
