W is for Winning

When I first joined a basketball league, our team was one of the worst teams in the league. We were on a losing streak (0-5) and I started to get sick of it. I told my coach if he could improve the team because I was sick of losing. He felt me and started to push the team. We did rigorous drills each practice and each time I came home, my arms or legs were sore. Everyday, my dad worked on my upper strength to increase my shooting range and this really helped. Although the exercises were very strenuous, it made an impact. It didn’t have to use much force when I shot the ball. When our season (2012-2013) started, we all came in confident like we were going to win. Our tallest player, Nathan, won the tip and our team had possession

During the three nights of tryouts, I was always the first one to finish the sprints, I hustled on every play, and left everything I had on the court. Confident in the way I played, I checked the results when they came out–I had been cut for the second year in a row. My heart dropped and millions of thoughts ran through my mind–I should stop playing basketball, I wasted all my time on something useless, hard work does not pay off. After pondering on these thoughts for several days, I decided to rededicate myself to the sport; I found a more competitive AAU team to play for, IYB Basketball and Wayne PAL Wolfpack, and found myself a trainer. Everyday after finishing my schoolwork, I either went to the gym to lift and play basketball or went to an AAU practice or game.…

Goals are easy to set, but take determination, perseverance, and confidence to achieve. During my junior year of high school, I played on the varsity golf team. At the beginning of the season, our team set the goal of winning the sectional tournament in order to advance to the district tournament. Working hard as an individual and teammate to reach our desired result would be a necessity. At the sectional tournament I was on the 17th hole when my coach indicated I would need to score below a 90 for our team to advance to the district tournament.…

Better to Be Ahead I have been doing the same routine for the last 12 years now, wake up at the crack of dawn, rush to get myself ready and try to look at least a little presentable. I’d get to school and have to listen to the teachers lecture us about how we aren’t going anywhere in life and have to put up with immature kids who just want to mess around at school all day. I put up with all of this all because I want a good education and to be able to make my family proud. “What are you going to College for?” “Are you going to College?”…

Being almost six feet tall, playing a sport – basketball or volleyball – was almost expected of me. My parents put me in many sports as a child but three, which I played throughout my entire life, were soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. As a kid, I was always good at basketball because of my height and as I grew up, it became an advantage. So, being told in eleventh grade that I wasn’t good enough to make the team was devastating. “Your work ethic isn’t there,” Coach told me, “You’re athletic, but you don’t want it.”…

I had my dad take me to Mallery Recreation Center where every Saturday I would work on a different skill to improve my game. The workouts were intense for a kid that was still in elementary school. The most important parts of my game at the time were ball handling skills, foul shots, layups, and staying in shape. We would begin the practice with suicides and end the practice with suicides. “IF YOU AIN’T IN SHAPE, YOU CAN’T PLAY” are the words that would often come out of coach’s mouth.…
