Personal Narrative: Volunteering At The Salvation Army

Volunteering at The Salvation Army I realized this was my chance to make a difference. When people hear that a person is “homeless,” I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is a bum, dirty clothes, a drug addict, and a drunk. However, that is not the case at all. Living in times like these, recession plays a huge role on unemployment rates which eventually leads to homelessness. Not only that but natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, left thousands of people homeless in New York. Being the only person to volunteer at The Salvation Army I was nervous walking in alone, not knowing how it would be like. As I entered a few friendly smiles greeted me in and I was told to go to the back kitchen. The beating of my heart, like the gallop of a thousand horses, pulsated in my ears. Even though I chose to do this, my palms were sweaty and my foot tapping as I nervously stood there waiting to be told what to …show more content…
Most of the people that were there yesterday were back again. The only difference this time was that we made 60 pounds of delicious spaghetti with meat pasta sauce. Many of the people I met were friendly and started short conversations with me. Overall, the experience was eye-opening and enlightening. Using my time to help people, helps me realize that making people happy is what brings joy to my life and that there is nothing more important that this to me. These two days brought so much happiness and joy. Even though I wasn’t rewarded with a tangible or materialistic gift, that simple “thank you and God bless you” brought a smile to my face, making me realize that my hard work and I am appreciated by these people. I learned values, and I felt accomplished. When I came back home, I reflected on all that I had learned and experienced these past months with these life changing experiences. I wanted to hang on to this wonderful feeling of being there people in need. I love using my free time to help others, and hope to

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

Working at the Salvation Army requires an eye for detail, a sense of organization, working well with others and more. Working there is not just accepting donations and throwing them in some corner until a truck comes and takes the donations on to the next stop like many may think when the name Salvation Army comes up. I worked at a branch of the Salvation Army in Hamburg, PA and the facility there included a store for the community. I was asked to bring in donations from the designed place just outside the store and sometimes even from the cars of donators depending on the size of the donations. I would sort through them and depending on the conditions they were in would either save, tag, price and hang the clothing.…

Experiencing Heritage Day was truly an inspirational and touching event that has changed my perspective of not only the people of the Lehigh Valley, but the community as a whole. Seeing the way that the less fortunate individuals of our population are treated for healthcare was eye-opening to say the least. The homeless of the Lehigh Valley are not provided with the clean and safe facilities that a majority of the general population has access to. The generous professionals and volunteers at Sacred Heart made the atmosphere as comfortable as possible, given the situation. It was a wonderful experience to help these kind individuals through the service of cleaning.…

This past summer I was chosen, along with one of my classmates to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) - A "life-changing event". Now, don't get me wrong. I was extremely excited to go, but I quickly started to question how this week-long conference, compared to any other, would be "life changing". I just told myself to maintain a positive attitude and strive to get the best out of it that I could.…

Volunteering One day, I walked to my friends house. Her mom had just had a baby boy. Just by looking at her, I could tell she was exhausted. So I offered to babysit the baby, so she wouldn’t have to worry about when her baby's diaper needed to be changed, or when he needed to be fed. She said I didn’t have to, but she knew I had a baby brother.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…

The American Red Cross came to my school at least twice a year for our biannual blood drive and ever since I was allowed to donate I have. Now Jacob was 16 and was given permission to finally get to do his first donation. After I had completed my donation I stayed around for a while and rested before going back to my class, in truth I was trying to run out the clock so I could skip my AP Calculus class that day. In my waiting, I sat with Jacob and someone who was currently donating and during the conversation Jacob mentions that he was unable to donate. This came as a surprise as everyone that I had heard of being deferred since I started was due to weight issues, which seemed to not be the problem with his case.…

“If you want to be happy for an hour, play a video games, if you want to be happy for a day, go to an amusement park, but if you want be happy forever, help others” I stared at that sign in my seventh grade social studies teacher’s class. Now in eighth grade, I smiled, as I proceeded to continue helping my teacher put up kids’ map of the world. Picking up the next map and carefully examining each of the continents I thought, “This is what I love. I do think I will be happy forever helping others who need my help as a volunteer”. That's when I truly understood my love for volunteering and making others smile.…

The Most Valuable Apprentice I had never thought that two weeks of working in the hospital would give me so much experience that I could not get from anywhere else. Two years ago when I had an exchange year in Germany, I aimed to gather as much of the new experiences as I can in order to know more about the people, the culture, and the world. I have participated numbers of interesting activities that I have never done before and one of them was one of the most valuable experience that have ever came into my life. In early January, four months after the arrival in Germany, I decided to apply for a “Praktikum im Krankenhaus” or an apprentice in the hospital, and the reasons for that was my curiosity of what it be liked, working in the hospital.…

The homeless people I’ve helped have always been grateful for BuildOn helping them with their struggles. In 2014 I was helping a beautiful soul who lived in the shelter named Leslie and she was telling me her story of how she became homeless. She explained that things got hard for her and her kids when she lost her job and she was unable to support herself and her children so the system ended up taking the kids from her and as she began to cry just talking about her past my heart ached for her and wished I could help her out. After listening to a story like Leslie’s I wanted always wanted to make a difference in someone’s life no matter how small the impact is I wanted to make sure that everyone can see me as someone who they can talk to and feel comfortable…
