"Unique New York, Unique New York, Unique New York, Unique New York." The children's choir at my temple was practicing vocal exercises to prepare for our upcoming Shabbat service, the first one that I would participate in. When that evening came, however, I forgot the words to Hatikvah and ran offstage in tears. My parents were right behind and ended up spending the end of the service comforting me.That night, I made the decision to quit choir before I had a chance to process what my failure meant. After that, I focused on activities that I already knew I was good at for the rest of elementary and middle school. Needless to say, none of these activities involved singing.

Last summer, however, I decided to branch out. Since I was at summer camp, I figured that any embarrassment would only last another week, until the summer was over. I was put in charge of creating and running a twenty minute segment of a program called "Voice Your Choice," which was about presidential elections. Two hundred high school campers would be participating in an activity about campaigning, I spent weeks designing and planning a phone banking simulation. In spite of hours upon hours of preparation, my section of "Voice Your Choice" was a complete disaster. Nobody remembered any of the pretend candidates’ political

This year, I am taking a Stagecraft class at school, where we learn about set design and construct the sets for my high school's productions. I didn't know anything about set construction when I started the class, but I know that by the time we begin to work on the high school's major shows, I will, and this will be due in part to many failures in class. In addition, I've even led services at my temple. I've made many mistakes, even leaving out three pages of prayers once. Being onstage still doesn't feel completely natural to me, but with each service, I get better at

Have you ever found a group that felt like your home away from home. Well I am about to tell you about two groups that helped shape me as a better person, and felt like home. For seven years I have participated in the Mount Vernon Band program. I don’t fail often. I tend to be good at the things I attempt, usually with little or no effort on my part. I don’t say this to brag about how lucky I am, but to give context. Since I don’t fail often and am generally used to success, the times I have failed make a prodigious impression on me. I am a choir kid.…

It was sixth grade, and I had just set the first and most significant long term goal of my lifetime. I was in the beginning choir class. Just as the bell rang to start the period, a line of fourteen high schoolers walked into the classroom. Impeccably dressed, confident, and impossibly cool, they were exactly what I hoped to be when I grew up. My choir teacher, Mrs. Gaddis, introduced them as Vocal Fusion, a pop a capella group at the high school, and explained that they would be performing a few pep rally songs.…

In 2007 I was in the musical “Bye Bye Birdie”, I thought nothing of it at the time, it was just something my whole school participated in so I decided to join in. I was in the ensemble so I kind of just stood in the back and went through the motions. As I became older and was getting better and more interested i started getting roles in shows. Having a part really impacted my public speaking and confidence in front of crowds.…

In the third grade I sang gospel on the radio. It was something that I loved. In every school performance I have ever been in, I’ve sang a solo or sang/danced in a group. Forrest Gump always said: “life is like a box of chocolates.” In my experience, life is like a high school musical. You don’t always have to be in the spotlight to shine. I work for my dad on our family ranch in Jones Creek, Texas. The work is hard, backbreaking, and tiring. Everyday when I get home I eat the meal that my momma makes for us: there is no arguing whether or not that is what you are having for supper. Every night I get in bed completely wore out from a hard days work, then I wake up to do it all again in the morning. This job is not for everyone, however it is for me.…

Through my experience, my freshman and sophomore years as a musician were terrifying. On top of the shock of the new atmosphere at school, I had to play my instrument with and in front of others, which was quite a stretch for me at the time. I would always beat myself up about minute mistakes I had glorified during rehearsals, playing tests, and especially auditions. However, after I did not make an Illinois Allstate ensemble my junior year, my approach to these nerve-wracking situations completely changed. Instead of thinking failing negatively, those uncomfortable experiences actually made me improve as I had taken more auditions.…

My first musical done through my high school, ironically being “High School Musical”, was a meaningful event in my life and has no doubt made an impact on my life. I have made many good friends through the theatre department, and spending everyday with the cast and crew helped me further understand them and how they each think, which will help me become an outstanding citizen on campus because I will be able to help others when in need. Besides the other actors in the show, “High School Musical” solidified my prediction that I wanted to pursue acting as a serious career for my life. Outside of school, I had been a part of a few acting experiences, mainly just a few extra roles in upcoming films, and they were all really fun, however, the way I was able to finally see how an audience would react to my acting enthralled me. Whilst the show was loads of fun, it wasn’t always such a simple, lighthearted extracurricular.…

Forming my own opinions was one of the most challenging jobs for a younger me. I figured it would be easier on me of I just listened to other people’s judgments and based my life off of them. I watched the same shows as the kids whose rulings mattered, I listened to the same music as all the prominent kids, I even judged people I had never met before based on the assumptions of other people. I now hate shows that require audience participation even though they cannot hear or see you, but because most people watched Dora the Explorer and Barney and Friends, I did too and regretted every second of it. Music used to bore me because of how simple and repetitive it was.…
