Personal Narrative: Vladek

Improved Essays
It was 1944, and me and Vladek, my husband, left Srodula and snuck toward Sosnowiec. It was still very dark outside, and we didn’t know where we could hide ourselves. But our son Richieu had a governess named Janina from before the war, and she always offered to help us. We came to her house near the town and knocked on her door. I remember her screaming “My god! It’s the Spiegelman's! You’ll bring trouble ! Go away! Quickly!” before slamming the door on us. Frightened no one would help us, we decided to try my father’s old house. The janitor has known my family for years. Maybe he is willing to help. Vladek wore a coat and boats like a gestapo would wear, but someone would easily tell I’m a Jew, and he was afraid I was going to get caught.

Neighbors, written by Jan Gross, is a book telling a different side of the Holocaust. Most times when people think of the Holocaust, they believe it just had to do with Germans killing Jews in Concentration Camps. However, there is another side to the story, one that starts on a summer day in a town called Jedwabne. This time it is different because it is not the Germans killing the Jews, it is the Poles. Jan Gross mentions many different sources throughout the book to prove what happened; however, the question still remains if these so called sources can be trusted.…

Energy ricocheted off every wall and piece of furniture in Tito Valentino’s basement, jolting every fifth-grade boy in the Pellegrini’s basement with more loud and rambunctious ideas for fun and trouble that Friday in April. The sweet scent of sugary sweets and drinks mixed with the smelly stench of dirty socks, forming a sort bitter-sweet smell. To a spectator, the loud chants of victory after scoring a shinny-hockey goal, the loud cackles from Dan prank-calling a toaster vendor, and the whaling whines from being shot in the head with a nerf machine gun all at once may seem overwhelming, but to us kids it was just another Friday. Unfortunately, the disease we intuitively identified as “boredomsease” had plagued the basement and destroyed all…

Today started like any other day, I woke up to the dreary skies of Minsk, Belarus once again and continued on with my morning routine. I still find it difficult to believe that I, Claus Dietfried a 34-year-old born and raised in Hamburg has ended up working in Shirokaya Street Concentration camp along side one of the biggest names in the SS; Heinrich Himmler. I remember the days before the war when I owned a quiet bookstore and knew nothing of the terrors that I would soon face. I was told to be grateful for the opportunity to have such a high ranking within the SS; in fact, when I informed my dad of my promotion he gleamed with pride. I was apprehensive about my jump in ranks and worried about the power I would soon have, I would later learn…
