The summer before my junior year I realized that I wanted to play on the varsity soccer team. Trying out for a varsity sport as a junior, with never having played on the junior varsity team as freshman or sophomore, was definitely a bold move. I was unsure if I had the courage to follow through and risk failure if I didn't make it. Encouraged by family and friends, I decided to give it a shot. When I first entered the information meeting in room 306, I immediately felt intimated INTIMIDATED seeing THE PLAYERS WHO HAD BEEN PLAYING TOGETHER for the last two years. It was the first time in awhile that I've felt like the "odd man out." IT WAS NOT a feeling that I particularly enjoyed. At the meeting, I learned about the workouts, open field practices and camp that I would need to participate in TO EVEN HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE THE TEAM. I had to ask myself if I was really willing to put this much time and effort into something where the outcome WAS UNCERTAIN AT BEST. After thinking about it and remembering how much I enjoyed playing, I decided to commit 100 percent to trying to secure a spot on the team. After all, I had been missing soccer since I WAS on my EIGHTH grade school team. At the first open field, that uncomfortable feeling came back. Two to three times a week I would meet up with the guys from the team to practice shooting and dribbling. I became friends with THEM and was surprised with their support and willingness to help me secure a spot. While working out with them, it was pretty apparent that they were much better than I was and that I had a lot of work to do. As time went on, that slowly changed and I started looking like I BELONGED. At the end of the summer, I went from being a kid who hadn't played soccer in MORE THAN two years to someone who looked like a varsity soccer

“Beep Beep Beep” It is 5 am and my hand can’t make it to the alarm clock before the voices in my head start telling me that it is too early and too dark to get up. But I did not ask for their opinion, I rise like a phoenix and before I know it, I am drenched in sweat and walking out an empty gym in route to the soccer field. Why you ask because I was told I was not good enough, too uncoordinated, and too tall to play soccer and I was on a mission to prove them wrong.
