Variety in the Pantry
My father used to be a chef so he knows how to cook for a crowd. Every time he cooks we have leftovers for what seems like weeks. My sister and I often got very tired of what we were eating and my father would be the one stuck struggling to eat all the extra food. My sister and I developed what is called food fatigue. When you repeatedly eat the same thing over and over again it takes a toll on your mental even physical wellbeing.
Let me explain
Your mind starts to get bored with the same flavors and textures and it can also lead to the person not feeling hungry at al. In extreme cases the person will refuse to eat anything at all. So to avoid food fatigue in a long term survival situation you should have a combination …show more content…
These cans usually have about a 3-5 year shelf life to them and they can bring new flavors to your dish. They provide a lot of healthy and tasty variety when you are in an emergency situation. I know my mother always kept a bunch of tomato products and condensed soup around so we could a have base for whatever we were cooking these are also a good choice because you can have your favorites stashed away. A lot of my recipes with have canned goods and things of that nature to provide more flavors and just because the sell by date is print it doesn’t mean your food has gone bad. I’ll explain that in Spoiled or Not? An upcoming article.
Spices
I think this is also one of my favorite sections of the kitchen. You can turn any food into a really tasty meal with the addition of spices and herbs. I always like to keep a stock pile of the expanded basics in case of an emergency. Most of the herbs and spices that you will be using have medical properties and can help your family stay healthy. Later on I plan to write an article about specific herbs and spice that you should keep an abundance of.
