Personal Narrative: Unjust Labor Practices

Improved Essays
When I started this semester I was a an activist, but for animal rights and I fought against corporations who commit horrific cruelty to animals. As the semester progressed, I realized that a passion grew inside of me to start fighting for the rights of humans also. I learned so much when I dove deeper into the unjust labor practices of FoxConn. This made me realize that so many other companies follow similar practices and hide these from the public. I am now trying to live a way that doesn’t involve the abuse of others due to the technological products I use. I have been told by colleagues that think my aspirations are crazy and are impossible. I am hoping to one day live in a way that doesn’t hurt others. For now, I am just trying to get involved as much as I can in activism locally. …show more content…
“we know everyone who breaks the law, we know when you're doing it. We have GPS in your car, so we know what you're doing.” This was stated by senior Ford executive Jim Farley. This made me think to myself that we one day might not even need a government system if we are controlled by computers. This is quite scary to me and I feel technology is moving way too quickly a lot of the time.
When I saw the article Uber and the lawlessness of 'sharing economy' corporates, I couldn’t help but to think of the current battle I am having with recovering from an Uber car accident that happened on January 18th. I felt the guilt being put on me because I decided to go to the hospital room due to feeling incoherent and having whiplash. I still take rideshare on a frequent basis because I commute to paid gigs a lot and a lot of times parking is tripe compared to what a ride share would be for me and the CTA takes at least 1.5 times longer than the Metra or

Everything you do electronically can be tracked, saved, and manipulated, regardless of where you are. Widescale spying occurring today eerily mimics George Orwell’s 1984 in an imminent and frightening way, as average people are no longer as private as they used to be. In 1984, Winston is trapped within a totalitarian government that watches everything its residents do or say. These residents are spied on everywhere they go and are never immune to government overwatch. In the United States today, normal citizens are being watched by internet-connected devices, government big-data collection, and businesses looking for profit.…

I was born a woman; probably my father wasn’t so happy about my gender. Perhaps he wanted a boy named after him. I can’t remember my first thought as a baby, but I’m sure I wasn’t able to distinguish between males and females, or the fact that the doctor was a male and the nurse was a female. I just knew I wanted to love and be loved regardless of my race, sex, or religion. My friend Melissa was raped, and it was her fault.…

Real Eyes, Realize, Real Lies Our modern day technology is starting to mirror George Orwell's vision in 1984. Throughout the years, our technology has progressed and has become more efficient than it has been in previous years. Even our smartphones that we sit in our back pocket or the laptops we carry around us are more innovative than all of the technology combined in the 60s and 70s. This may be an advantage to our everyday life, but at what cost?…

Standing under the familiar radiant heat, the gentle glow on my skin reminded me of the many summers I spent being complacent in Washington. However, surrounding me were kids from numerous families who knew nothing about complacency. They were always moving, always multitasking, and always working; I wondered how migrant farm worker families coped with such a restless lifestyle compared to mine. For the past four summers, I traveled with the St. Anthony Parish youth group on mission trips. Most recently, I spent the last two summers in Bellingham serving the migrant farm worker communities through the Agape Mission program.…

Her back, looking like a stick that a kid didn’t finish breaking, held her on the ground making her shriek in pain if she was to move. The vet slowly pushed the medicine into her vane letting her be relieved from the world. She was hit by a big white ford speeding around a school bus to beat the line of cars being stopped by it.…

Meeting Ayaan during my stay at Columbia was a welcoming experience that inspired me to learn more about others and their world. Our first few conversations were about academic related subjects such as social problems and the significance of the legal system in the United States.
