Personal Narrative: Understanding My Religious Life

Improved Essays
In order for one to understand my religious life one needs to understand where I come from. I come from a dominican family that is loud. I come from Lawrence, Massachusetts. I come from “the struggle”. I come from a catholic family, but Im personally on the fence about my religion just because I don't really know if i believe in a higher power. Every since I was little i've been raised to be a catholic but certain event in my life made me want t challenge those beliefs which is why I am on the fence about where i stand with my religious beliefs.
I come from a family where you are baptized by the age of 6 and go to sunday school until you're done with high school. Growing up my family was very religious but I always seemed to have a disconnect because I didn't always agree with what everyone was saying. My family was very judgmental of everyone but you would think that being so religious would make them not judge people instead it was the complete opposite. They were always so racist and mean to anyone who wasn't like them or met their standards. People like that were exactly the people that i ated because they were essentially bullies.

when I was younger i never really had my mom in my life and even when I did have my mom finally she was deported back to the Dominican republic because of mistakes that she had made. This event was one of the most hurtful events that have ever happened to me and just when I had faith in god and needed him the most he let me down. He left me all alone with no parents and I was devastated. I kept waiting on the miracle that they all say will come when you need him the most and I just sat there and waited for my mom to be back home with me. I believed that if I kept praying how I was once told to do in the sunday school that I went to every weekend I would get my mom back but I

My perspective on religion as a young child was mostly about rules and learning about stories in the bible. I was pretty afraid to do certain things because i was afraid of what my family would think, because the church had expectations for certain things. I remember one time i colored my nails with a marker and i was afraid the pastors would see on Sunday for i shook their hand with my left hand, pretty funny to think about it now. My source of learning who Jesus was through my family, or through my Sunday school class.…

“Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat.” George W. Bush stated this about the cowardly September 11th attacks. During that fateful day I was glued to my poorly constructed high school chair, gazing in disbelief what was unfolding on Mr. Cox’s History class television.…

Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…

My worldview closely resembles the Biblical Worldview described in the Charry text, but by no means is anywhere near where it could be. My Christian character will continue to develop and mature throughout my life as I continue to study the scriptures, commune with God in prayer, continually ask for repentance, and forgiving those who have showed transgressions toward me. L. Gregory Jones states, “Christian living requires a willingness to inquire after the God of Jesus Christ, an inquiry which shapes us a people of repentance and forgiveness” (Charry, 2000, p. 204). Repentance and forgiveness are two aspects of the Christian walk that I struggle with. There are many times that I get so busy with life that I forget to prayerfully repent…

Religion is a tough subject to approach. So many people believe in different ideas of life and have different outlooks on what’s expected of them religiously. I spent more time with God then I could ever remember having done. Family, friends, and I prayed without ceasing for the healing of my mother and for God’s will to be done. God answered those prayers by calling my mother home to heaven and providing her with complete restoration and healing there. I will never understand why those prayers were not answered the way I would have liked them to have been, with my mom being healed on Earth and able to spend more time with me and my family, but I trust in what God allowed to happen. I trust in what God allowed to happen, because I know that He loves me and is a faithful God.…

Religion My dad and my mom were in church listening to the sermon, and he leaned over and complained to my mom that he had been noticing some very strange symptoms. My father’s religion is classified as Greek Orthodox and my mother was raised Protestant. As there are differences in these religions, it was settled that the Bible is the main determinant in our house. I have many friends and family members who don’t necessarily believe in the Bible or its viewpoint. Not pushing my views onto them, and vice versa, has kept our relationship balanced in many areas. Because there are hundreds of religious groups in one society alone, it is important to become open to these beliefs, even if they may be different from your…

In Essentials of Sociology 11th edition on page 104 it defines social institutions as standard or usual ways that a society meets its basic needs – vitally affect your life. As you can see the term is very vague. Upon looking up the term online I learned that social institutions when utilized by modern sociologists it refers to compound social forms that replicate themselves such as governments, the family, human languages, universities, hospitals, businesses and legal systems. Jonathon Turner defined it as “a complex of positions, roles, norms and values lodged in particular types of social structures and organizing relatively stable patterns of human activity with respect to fundamental problems in producing life-sustaining resources, in…
