Personal Narrative: Understanding Cultural Diversity

Decent Essays
When one thinks of Iowa, one does not necessarily think of cultural diversity. The more and more I think about it as I have matured, it was exceedingly challenging to grow up as an Asian in my community. That is because I sometimes had trouble understanding the culture of others and my own culture at my young age.
When I was younger, I found it very challenging to understand many of the things my peers and teachers were saying figuratively. For example, I had difficulty understanding jokes, so I took them literally and did not know they were joking. Most of the time they were laughing and I had no idea why they were laughing. Furthermore, I had difficulty understanding the figurative language in reading and finding the deeper meaning

Growing up in Skokie, Illinois and going to arguably one of the most diverse high schools in the nation, Niles West, I have grown up with people of all different backgrounds and cultures. I was not even aware of our school’s diversity until I visited my cousin’s graduation ceremony in Geneva, Illinois. According to illinois-demographics.com, Geneva has a 90.9% white population. In contrast to this, Skokie has a 65.6% white population. He seemed to be the only Asian-American that I saw that day, and really stuck out.…

When I was 9-10 years old I lived with my mom, dad, and sister in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. Lake Ariel was a small town where all you would see is corn, fields, and woods. We had lived in this house for two years and I had a good group of friends that I had met from school or extracurricular activities. I attended Western Wayne Hamlin elementary school and was in fourth grade. The school district was huge, covering six townships, but my school was small.…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

For my minority experience, I decided to attend a church service at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Warsaw, Indiana. The service lasted for about one hour and was attended by many individuals of various ages. When the members of the church first walked into the sanctuary, they walked up to the front and kneeled or bowed to the cross and then walked to their seats and said a prayer that I did not know. Throughout the service, there were a few songs that were sung and the priest spoke for the majority of the time. At the end, the members of the church then took communion and received a blessing and anointment with oil from the priest.…

I grew up in the bay area, where it looked like the visual embodiment of the “American Melting Pot.” Where I was moving to in Missouri, it looked almost overwhelmingly white. There I would no longer have my Muslim neighbors, or the little mexican girl that I played with at recess as child, who grew up to be one of my closest confidantes. Diversity was one of the principles that to this day I believe in the strongest, and was the main component for the pride I took in California. Being part of such a large integration of different people and cultures made me feel like I was apart of something greater than my own little bubble.…

Eleven years ago, when I first entered the school district I am currently in, it was predominantly White. As the years went on, I would see truckloads of White classmates move away while simultaneously seeing truckloads of minorities filling the space they left. I had no problem with this because I can speak to and feel comfortable with any person, regardless of ethnicity. It was not until my eleventh grade AP Psychology teacher, Mr. Surget, identified this phenomenon as white flight that I completely solved the puzzle. I did not think anything of it and still do not.…
