Personal Narrative: Uncovering The Homeless

Sitting on the corner covered in dirt, ripped jeans, shirt tight and small, and a beard that looks like a bird made a nest in it. He’s pushing a cart full of cans and beer bottles. Whistling a tune I can’t seem to place. He has the biggest smile on his face, he is waving at cars and even asking how people’s days are. I look down and glance at my two hundred dollar pair of shoes, I look over at is… what used to be shoes. There’s more tape on his feet than there is shoe.
He strolls past a man and asks “how’re you doing?” the man looks at him in disgust and throws his half empty can of soda on the ground. The man climbed into his Mercedes-Benz trying not to dirty up his new suit. The unkempt homeless fellow fell over coughing and retching in pain. The well off man sat there for a second shielding his face, saying he might catch some “disease” he criticised him for a second, proceeded to throw change at him, than drove off leaving a trail of dirt. I ran over to him and reached my hand down to help him up. He immediately flinched and whimpered.

When you walk down the street don’t shadow the homeless. They’re people too, instead you should help them. I’m not telling you to switch lives around, all it takes is one act of kindness to make a change in someone’s life. Use your training in your professional field to your advantage. If you’re a doctor than go help the sick, diagnose them, help them get through it. They just need guidance. Twenty-six percent of homeless are diagnosed with serious mental issues. So when you see a homeless person on the streets, offer friendship or your help. Not all want money. People have bad times in their life where everything goes wrong, some lose a little, and some lose everything. Not all people can get out of it by themselves so be that kind person you know you want to be and help. Volunteer at shelters for homeless, rack up canned goods you don’t use, or even just collect

Homelessness from a Social Lens Homelessness is a growing concern in the United States, as 7-12 million adults have been homeless at some point in their lives (Markos, Lima, Homelessness). An important question that has been presented is, why should the government adopt financial aid as a solution to homelessness in American cities? This is a very crucial question to think about, as homelessness continues to grow everyday. Overall, it is shown that once people become homeless it is nearly impossible for them to return to their previous lives. For many years, society has looked down upon the homeless because of their social status. People have been given the notion that the homeless are in the situation that they’re in because of many taboos that society looks down upon like alcohol, drugs, and gambling. People should be showing the homeless compassion and offer help, instead are met with mean actions and awful words towards their way of life. Not all homeless people are in their situation because of addictions. There are a great number of homeless people out there who are veterans that struggle with mental disorders that they received from past wars, such as PTSD, that do not allow them to live a normal life.…

Empathy, and in some cases respect, overcame my fears. I found myself wanting to love these people rather than protect myself from them. Growing up in a southern Alabama town of less than 10,000 residents, I was not truly aware of the issue of homelessness. Homelessness was only a subject which I had seen in the news and in movies. However, when I became a peer helper as a junior in high school, my perception soon changed. I became part of a peer mentoring program, in which I counseled underprivileged and troubled middle school students. Through this program I discovered that homelessness was not a problem rooted in major cities, for it lied even in a town as small my own.…
