Personal Narrative: Two Rounds Of Cuts

Being let go can be many things, it can be cut from a team, laid off, or rejected. For me, being cut was a shock and a huge disappointment. I tried out for the Bridgewater State University men’s soccer team and was dismissed in the second round of cuts. Soccer is not just a game for me, it is a significant part of my life. I have played year round for the past fourteen years both indoors and outdoors. Elected as varsity captain of my high school team, and leading goal scorer for both my high school and club teams, I proved I had the ability to play at the collegiate level. I love the game and being on the soccer field is where I belong. I was recruited by the coach of the men’s soccer team at Bridgewater State University and was excited for the opportunity to prove myself. …show more content…
I was feeling confident, playing well and making new friends. The other players were acknowledging my abilities and at a scrimmage the coach made positive comments about my foot skills. Since being recognized by both the players and the coach I was not dreading the next cut. The coach announced on day six that the second round of cuts would be posted outside his office by noon. I walked over with confidence and checked the list, my name was not there. I looked again and, sure enough, my name was not there. Shocked and disappointed in myself, I walked away with my head down. This was the first time in all my years of playing soccer that I did not make the team. After processing the loss of not making the team I have decided I will not give up. I know I have the abilities to add value to a team, whether at the collegiate or club level. My determination will continue as I plan on playing the sport at the intramural level and practice with the men’s soccer team in the spring. My experience throughout this process has made me comprehend that rejection does hurt, but that you should never to give up what you love. Other chances will come your
