Personal Narrative: Turning To Religion

Improved Essays
One day, my mother noticed something was wrong with me. Usually, my mother and I don’t have a close relationship. She never tried to talk to me about what I was going through because I would shut her out. But, on this particular day, she told me “I don’t know what’s happening with you, but God is always here for you”. It was then that I realized I do have an alternative escape: religion. I began to go to church and be involved in my religion more. I prayed everyday to have the strength to get out of this relationship and never look back. I eventually broke up with him and moved on, happier than I’ve ever been before. It took a lot for me to get out of this relationship; I made this huge step all because I found relief in religion. It was at this point in my life that I decided nothing more mattered to me than to identify myself by my religion. It became who I am and how I live my life on a daily basis. Turning to religion provided meaning to my life. Before, I was hopeless and at the end. I felt as though my life was a horror movie on loop. Praying and being optimistic that someone was looking after me gave me the hope I needed to continue my life and be who and where I am today.
In this situation, my identity served as a coping mechanism. I was able to deal with the breakup and all that

When I was younger, my parents were very strict about following my religion. In the Catholic religion, worshipping other gods is a “great sin”. In the Guyanese culture, you can find many individuals practicing the Hindu religion. My closest cousins were mostly Hindu. They would invite us to get-togethers and Hindu functions at their house. My parents never allowed my sisters and I to go, although most of the time the kids would play while the adults took part in the functions. I resented my parents for a long time because I believed they wanted to keep us away from having fun and being with my

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…

Many people don’t know what they want to be when they “grow up”, as for my mother she didn’t know what type of religion she wanted to be in when she “grew up”. However, she did know the basics that she believed in which was God, the Holy Spirit, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Bible that being said she considered herself Christian and raised me as a Non-Denominational Christian. That was until my senior year of High School when my mom decided she no longer wanted to be part of the Non-Denominational Christian faith and switched over to becoming part of the LDS faith known as the Mormons and flipped my life upside-down with their different views of norms and values. Growing up Non-Denominational Christian is fairly simple faith and to me…

They carried out every-way they knew how as parents to ensure we would love God ourselves. Shortly after graduating from High School in 2010, rebellion took root. Life was suddenly pushing and pulling in several directions all at once.…

My worldview closely resembles the Biblical Worldview described in the Charry text, but by no means is anywhere near where it could be. My Christian character will continue to develop and mature throughout my life as I continue to study the scriptures, commune with God in prayer, continually ask for repentance, and forgiving those who have showed transgressions toward me. L. Gregory Jones states, “Christian living requires a willingness to inquire after the God of Jesus Christ, an inquiry which shapes us a people of repentance and forgiveness” (Charry, 2000, p. 204). Repentance and forgiveness are two aspects of the Christian walk that I struggle with. There are many times that I get so busy with life that I forget to prayerfully repent…

People are afraid to stand up for what they believe in because they are scared of what other people are gonna say and don’t want to be judged or even told what to do . Every person should not be afraid to speak up for they believe in because if you stand for it you should also defend it. This reminds me of the Puritans who faced kinda of the same thing I went through after people found out what religion I was. This subject reminds me of when I stood up for my religion because some friends knew what I stood for and they used to make fun of me and then one day it all changed.…

I was exposed to religion ever since I was born. I was raised in Lima, Peru, which is a very religious country, even though some of its traditions may not be very familiar to everyone. If you were to compare it to something, you could say that the type of traditions I was exposed to were like the traditions Americans had in the 1900's. I remember having to dedicate entire days to God, sometimes even longer periods, without any distractions. Religion was an extremely important aspect of life in Peru, and I was influenced by it, whether I wanted to or not.…
