I said, "Hold on just a minute, I'll be right with you soon as I finish this chapter," and it was one of the best chapters in the book. Then I dressed and off we flew to New York to meet some girls. As we rode in the bus in the weird phosphorescent void of the Lincoln Tunnel we leaned on each other with fingers waving and yelled and talked excitedly, and I was beginning to get the bug like Dean. He was simply a youth tremendously excited with life, and though he was a con-man, he was only conning because he wanted so much to live and to get involved with people who would otherwise pay no attention to him.…

When I was very little, walking up the trail with a pack on my back and the dog at my side, I would reach out and pull leaves from the bushes and trees. I would tear off corners, smooth the edges, and they would be turned into spaceships, flying across a lush alien world. Sometimes the trail, worn down into the ground over time by paws and hooves, would climb its way up onto the crests of ridges and meander across the moist, mossy fringes of muskegs. The rough, black and gnarled spruce branches that grew there were pirate spacecraft, pursued by the sleek birch branches from beyond the muskeg's soggy borders. As imaginary lasers and rockets exploded against the ships' hulls, I would rip off little pieces of bark and let them fall to the forest floor.…

When I attended Thorton Junior High School, I was real skinny, therefore, I felt like an outsider. I was thirteen years old and wearing a size one, whenever a big gust of wind came, it nearly knocked me down. People often teased me and called me names like Olive Oyle, Wilma, or Skinny Minny. Whenever we had gym, I was scared to show my body because it was so bony and I knew people would laugh, when they laughed, I felt like an outsider.…

“Can you believe we actually made it?’’ That’s what I asked my sister when we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge in our car. The lights, the people, the buildings, all so intriguing. We even saw the Statue of Liberty our first 5 minutes in the city. I couldn't help but to stick my head out of the window and breathe in that New York air, which was not a very good idea because there was trash a couple feet away from the car.…

There’s an odd, reality-altering sensation that occurs when one is positioned in a place that doesn’t have a definitive purpose outside of it’s relationship to a following action. Airports, parking lots, and waiting rooms are a few examples of these places called “liminal spaces”. Because they lack familiar context, our brains deem them dangerous. Knowing otherwise, we’re left with a feeling of curious wariness and expectant unease. This rush of adrenaline and abruption of butterflies is what I experience when I look up into the night sky.…

The road most people in my community go down you shouldn't expect me to writing this. My family doesn't have the most money in the world and we don't have the most opportunities here. My hometown is one of the poorest in the country and many people would expect me to just quit school and get a job to support my family, but that was not the case with me. I pushed myself to achieve something greater than what others around me have done. I didn't want to fall into the stereotype that because I am part Mexican I’m lazy or just another trouble maker because I'm not that!…
