How could I know that I was ready for this? I used to believe that football was hard and that I could never do what the sport asked for or for what it took to get a spot on the team, but now I believe in persistence. It started when I was walking into the gym at 7:30 in the morning, everyone was standing around talking to each other after being gone over summer break. I was looking around waiting to see someone I knew when Coach Church and all the other coaches entered the…

Baseball: the sport where you stand around for 20 minutes and move 3 feet to the left and move 3 feet to the right. It’s so intense. It’s so intense that you could take a nap on the field with everything out there. Of course, I’m being sarcastic. The only time it’s actually fun is when you’re annihilating the other team while they’re asleep on the field.…

I flew around the field and made plays, while backing it up in the batters box with my bat. My performance was sufficient enough to be extended an invite to the Area Code Games! I was ecstatic when I received my invite and celebrated with my family, and throughout the excitement, I knew my work wasn't done. I can remember arriving to the field to meet my team in Long Beach and seeing Palm trees in the outfield and a Fresh-off-the-press New Balance bag with all of my assigned gear in it. I knew then that my work had payed off and that experiencing that failure in the summer of 2015 was the fuel I used to get here.…

Baseball has and always will be a part of my life. Just like other activities, some seasons have been spectacular and others have been just average. Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

As I get off the bus, and stretch my legs after what seemed like a very long bus ride, I noticed a certain smell in the air. I have been here before, and each time the visits have been very uncomfortable. I love nothing more than to step on the ball field, and smell the fresh cut grass, and my kangaroo skin catchers glove. This ball field was different, for many different reasons. Playing baseball against Mountain Valley was always fun, because we always won.…

Baseball was the majority of my summer weekends, and I would have it any other way. Long weekends at hotels all across the state from Battle Creek to Frankenmuth, we played baseball where ever it was to be played. But these stages could not prepare me for where I was about to play next. The University of Dayton baseball stadium, the nicest natural field I have ever played on. It was beautiful from the seats, the mound, the outfield wall, it was all gorgeous.…

The sport interested me, so I decided to give it a shot. I worked extremely hard to make the JV team, and was ecstatic about that. Even though I had accomplished my goal of making the team, my self-motivation caused me to continue to work at home, on my own, to further improve my skills. At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

The 5 minutes was almost up. That’s all the time you get to look for your ball in a tournament. My socks were wet from all the dew that had not yet evaporated from the long blades of grass that I was searching through frantically. I zigzagged my way through the weeds, hopelessly, until the alarm sounded and my time expired. The walk of shame back to the tee box is an uncomfortable experience for anyone.…
