“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

Over the course of the last 15 years, my body has been taken over by FBI handlers for experimentation ad surveillance. It started just after September 11, 2001, and it has caused immense challenges for me in my own life. I went from running my own business to slapping myself, yelling and being completely unable to work. My business closed down, and I was put into a mental hospital by my father. I usually would not want hear other people’s thoughts because it is a complete invasion of privacy. In a world where it seems like everything is being watched or recorded, a person’s thoughts are all he or she has to him or herself. I am so paranoid that I actually censor my thoughts when surrounded by others because I have the irrational fear that people can read my mind and will think that I’m a complete psychopath. Even if a person is thinking about the reasons why he or she despises me or if he or she is thinking about some weird random story, I would never want to know what it is that he or she is thinking. It is very rare for people to actually know each other well.…

Did that really just happen? “Come join us at soccer tryouts next Friday at the main field after school!” read the big, white flyer which I had picked up previously in the week after hearing about this eye-opening news during morning announcements. I was sitting on the bench outside reading the details as I waited in line for the person whose reaction I was most anxiously waiting to see. As a 5th grader, my first instinct was to alert my mom right away, which is exactly what I did as soon as I got in the passenger seat of the all black sedan.…

I often find that being at Williams makes it easy for me to lose track of my personal life, and to put aside personal issues that I otherwise would have spent time trying to resolve. In the spirit of trying to make Williams a more human place, I decided to put Don’t Stare at a Blank Screen to use in my romantic life, as opposed to trying to fit it into a trite academic context. I started by identifying my problem: I met an amazing guy over the summer who goes to George Mason to study bioengineering on a pre-med track. We had a wonderful time with each other over the summer and got into a meaningful relationship for those four months. But, when it was time to leave New York City, we both agreed to end our relationship to avoid having to try long-distance.…
