In sixth grade, I had the opportunity to go out for the track and field team, but I did not. At the time, none of my older siblings had participated in track. My nerves were uncontrollable because qualifying for state was something that I had never dreamed of, but could actually achieve. I was a messy mixture of scared and excited. The meet was in Bowman, North Dakota, which never failed to be windy. My first event was the 1600 meter run. The race was at approximately noon, so I began my routine warm-up about a half of an hour before as usual. When it was about race time, my coach and I talked again about how I have the ability to place third and advance to state in this event. He believed in me enough for the both of us. I saw all of my teammates with smiles of reassurance and support on their faces. I looked around for my coach, but I could not find him. I just assumed he was somewhere on the field waiting for the race to start. Then the starter's gun went off and the four lap race began. I stayed at about fifth for the first half of the race as I continued to look for my coach because he was always waiting for me as I rounded the corners of each lap, but I could not find him which triggered more fear in my mind. I was in fourth place for all of the third lap and part of the fourth. Two of the three girls ahead of me were completely out of reach, but the third was only a few seconds away. With 200 meters left, I began to give it all I had and try to catch her for third place. She then began to pick up speed too and it was a neck and neck race between the two of us for the third place spot. As we neared the finish line, she finished with a time of five minutes and forty-three seconds while I finished at her heels with a personal record by five seconds of five minutes and forty-five seconds. I came in fourth and I was devastated. My coach found me at the finish line and said he saw the ending, but had a an important phone call during. It did not bother me that he missed most of it, I was just extremely disappointed in myself. I let myself, my team, and my coach down. It was a terrible feeling and I began to cry as
