Personal Narrative: Track And Field Team

Improved Essays
Growing up, I ran from place to place because I had a patience management problem. I did not like waiting or moving unwillingly slow, but I especially did not like getting somewhere late. Thus, my choice of transportation at the time, due to age limitations, was running. In elementary school, I ran just as much as most kids and just as fast.
In sixth grade, I had the opportunity to go out for the track and field team, but I did not. At the time, none of my older siblings had participated in track. When I entered seventh grade, I began volleyball. I enjoyed the practices because our coach would have the whole team run four football field laps before every practice. There was a junior on the team that always led the rest of us and I remember

My nerves were uncontrollable because qualifying for state was something that I had never dreamed of, but could actually achieve. I was a messy mixture of scared and excited. The meet was in Bowman, North Dakota, which never failed to be windy. My first event was the 1600 meter run. The race was at approximately noon, so I began my routine warm-up about a half of an hour before as usual. When it was about race time, my coach and I talked again about how I have the ability to place third and advance to state in this event. He believed in me enough for the both of us. I also had encouraging teammates who I knew were rooting for me. I did not want to let any of them down. I felt so much …show more content…
I saw all of my teammates with smiles of reassurance and support on their faces. I looked around for my coach, but I could not find him. I just assumed he was somewhere on the field waiting for the race to start. Then the starter's gun went off and the four lap race began. I stayed at about fifth for the first half of the race as I continued to look for my coach because he was always waiting for me as I rounded the corners of each lap, but I could not find him which triggered more fear in my mind. I was in fourth place for all of the third lap and part of the fourth. Two of the three girls ahead of me were completely out of reach, but the third was only a few seconds away. With 200 meters left, I began to give it all I had and try to catch her for third place. She then began to pick up speed too and it was a neck and neck race between the two of us for the third place spot. As we neared the finish line, she finished with a time of five minutes and forty-three seconds while I finished at her heels with a personal record by five seconds of five minutes and forty-five seconds. I came in fourth and I was devastated. My coach found me at the finish line and said he saw the ending, but had a an important phone call during. It did not bother me that he missed most of it, I was just extremely disappointed in myself. I let myself, my team, and my coach down. It was a terrible feeling and I began to cry as

I Corinthians 9:24 states, “Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you obtain it”. This Bible verse has had significant meaning to me particularly while running track in high school. Track is a sport that requires hard work, determination, speed, focus, and self-discipline.…

I decided to take action: every day at practice I would try to encourage all of my teammates, despite the different disciplines, even if it was just a simple “good job, man!”, or “keep it up!”. For the warm up each day, I would run with some of the slower people accordingly heartening them, making sure they didn’t feel inadequate compared to track runners who were faster. Little by little, other members of my team replicated my action. Consequently, by the middle of the season, everyone inspirited one another and supported each other. The focus of our pre-meet speeches, which reinforced this newfound reassurance, was family.…

Through trust, hard work, motivation, and a little luck, the 2015 Rochester girls golf team defeated their oppositions and took home a state title. Leaving myself the greatest memory of my High School experience.…

I was so happy I was near the front of the line because I wanted to stand out and make them remember me. While sitting there group after group kept going in it was getting close to my turn. While lined up behind these huge gray doors waiting for the judges to call us in, I didn’t think I could make it. My knees started shaking and I felt the butterflies in my stomach going crazy. Stepping on that blue mat I thought I had forgot what I had learned that week to make the team.…

I felt so loved and supported by this kind act that I decided that I would do the same for them. I would cheer on the other teams when they looked at little defeated because although it was race, I felt it was important for everyone involved to feel empowered so they would do the same for another runner. At the end of the season, I was awarded the Ohana Award by my coach, which symbolized that he believe that I had helped to unite the team and that became one of my proudest…
