Personal Narrative: Track And Field Journey

Great Essays
I have always been good at running. In middle school, I would always be the first to finish the mile long run for my Physical Education class. At that time, I often ran the mile in seven minutes flat; I was always at least thirty seconds ahead. It was the same outcome in high school as a freshman; however, that was not the case as a sophomore. As a sophomore, I ran the mile in seven minutes, but another sophomore, George, would run it in six minutes and fifty seconds. I wondered why he was so fast, so I asked him. He told me that he was in track and field and that I should join because he believed I had potential. George is the reason I started my track and field journey. When entering track and field into my sophomore year, I went in as a …show more content…
They were surprised that I actually came to practice. They said, “We are running three miles today, do you think you could keep up?” I scoffed, “Of course.” There was thirty long distance runners that were going to run with us in the practice. We all took off at the same time running 1.5 miles up the sidewalk of a Lasselle Street. The whole time Pablo, Eddie, and George were all ahead of me. After 1.5 miles, we ran back. Pablo finished 6th, Eddie Finished 7th, George finished 17th, and I finished 20th. Pablo and Eddie were surprised when I said I ran the three miles nonstop and embarrassed ten people on my first day by running faster than them. The three guys who got there first were tall, skinny, fast, juniors who were experienced. Their names were Oscar, Pedro, and Ivan. I was amazed at how fast these guys were at running and I thought they were really cool; I looked up to them. They had a group nickname as ‘The Triple Threat’. Throughout other practices, The Triple Treat would always be the first runners to get to the destination first and they would alternate on who would be the actual first guy there. The practices were tough, many new people came and went. I actually thought of quitting because I would struggle keeping up with the top runners. We had a mile long varsity race; a varsity race determines which seven runners are in varsity. The runners who made it were Oscar, Pablo, Ivan, Adrian, …show more content…
The team consisted of Kevin, Manuel, Juan, Gilbert, Pablo, Eddie, and me. It felt so good to be on varsity. I even got a mile time of five minutes and twenty-eight seconds. In the middle of my senior year I became the fourth fastest being faster than Pablo and Eddie, the two guys who had laughed at me when I wanted to join track and field; it felt good to prove them wrong. I had one last goal in my senior year and that was to run a mile in less than five minutes. I had trained hard the whole season and I could not get my time down any lower. The best time I had achieved was five minutes and eight seconds. Then on my last race, everything was perfect, I felt good, the air was fresh, and I was ready to run a mile in less than five minutes. The gun shot off and I took off. I ran my first three laps in seventy-five seconds each. At this pace I would make it at exactly five minutes. I decided to step it up and try my hardest on my last lap, so I picked it up. In the last one hundred yards, I killed myself and sprinted the fastest I have ever sprinted. I finished the lap in seventy-one seconds. I did it! I ran the mile in four minutes and fifty-six seconds. That was the second fastest mile time out of my whole school. Kevin had the first with four minutes and forty-eight

Because the ninth graders were not allowed to run in this strictly middle school race, I was among the oldest in the group. This was the meet that our team had been preparing for since the beginning of the season, and I prepared even more intensely in the past few days. I had been hydrating well, eating the right foods, and even skipped swim practice the day before to rest my muscles before the meet. This had been the moment that I had been preparing for, and made sacrifices for, and doing well felt like the only option. The pressure was swallowing me up, and pulling me back to the…

I ended the season 35 pounds lighter, 14 minutes faster, and for the first time so proud of my accomplishments that the sting of the auditorium experience almost faded. Mr. Pinkerton said by mid-October he saw my face for the first time because I always looked down. I was motivated to succeed because the words of a bully stung so deeply in my sole.…

It was a humid morning in February and the atmosphere of the field was uncomfortable: the air was thick and moist, and the sun was shadowed by the overcast of black clouds. The blades of grass were still wet from the morning dew and the dirt turned into mud. The confident chattering of the nearby teams coupled with the cold stares only worsened the situation. The pressure was on: it was my schools second track meet and my running coach expected my team to beat our personal records.…
