Personal Narrative: Toy Drive

Improved Essays
I grew up in the small town of East Palo Alto, California and I am raised by a single mother who works hard to provide for my family of 5. I had to watch her raise my three siblings and I. There was this one moment that has made me appreciate what we have now. It wasn't always like that. Right around Christmas, it was always hard for my mother to provide us with the picture perfect tree and gifts under that tree. When my sister and I were younger my mother thought it would be a great idea to volunteer at a toy drive. At the toy drive we helped children that were not so different from my family. Some of these families actually had less than my family. The majority of the families were homeless. Some were living out of their cars. Others had …show more content…
This pushed me to keep doing what I love for the people I love. We have been volunteering every since and I love it. The drive helped me with my community service hours and As Saint Francis being the school that stands out to me more than others because of their tradition of community, I know that I have to follow the tradition and enhance it. With the experience of giving back to my community and being proud of myself I will add on to Saint Francis with delight and merit. I will do that by showing perfection in my work, community, and basketball. Staying ahead on my work so I am able to be successful in basketball and have time to do community service, making sure I am not doing what a lot of people think I do because where I come from or because of my skin color, and not letting anyone get in my way of being successful are a few steps to help me be successful and get on track with Saint Francis tradition. I feel like Saint Francis is a great choice for me based on their classes, first impression, and basketball. Those three stand out to me out of the many reasons because of the tradition. Pride and excellence stands out to me because that is what colleges look for. Saint Francis can also help me get into my two choices of colleges Stanford and

Officially, starting from that day, my life was filled with elation and happiness. I never want to forget the time I started reading Maximum Ride. Starting off my day, I woke up from bed, gulped down some chow, and went back to sitting on my more than comfortable bed, reading the book of my future dreams: “Maximum Ride.” It was necessary to read this book, for a competition, called, Battle of the Books. Continuing on, the deeper I read into the book, the more hooked into the book I was.…

Another huge experience that has changed my outlook on life was going to the service project for the Isaac school district. The children attending the schools at the Isaac school district are in intense poverty. I have gone during the school days to help out in the classroom, to bring Thanksgiving dinner boxes, and to deliver a Christmas gifts to the kids. The kids on these campuses have the most amazing attitudes in the worst conditions. Some of the children go home on Friday and don't have a meal until they come back to school on Monday.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
