Personal Narrative: Tour Of Hayes School Of Music

Improved Essays
I took a tour of Hayes School of Music in early September. The first class I took was a private lesson between the flute professor and the first chair flautist. At first I was intimidated and scared, but after talking to him about his classes, his friends, and his time as Appalachian, I knew exactly where I belong. The first chair flautist shows hard-work, dedication, and passion. He enjoys what he does everyday and takes great pride through Appalachian University. It would be a great honor if I could be that passionate for my future school. I did not have to ask him if he liked the people at Appalachian, I could easily tell that he loved the band, he loved the professors, and he loved this university. From the tour I took of Hayes School of

I have always been independent, but I fully seeked independence when I was 16 years old. This was the year of 2016, and this was the year that my life changed; I was forced to grow up and learn how to be more independent. The first step to my seeking of independence was turning 16 years old and getting my driver’s license. This meant I was finally able to go out on my own and not rely on others to take me places anymore. In the year of 2016, I also began taking classes at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to earn college credits.…

In my small town of Centre, Alabama, I had no pride. I did not think our school had amazing programs or good representatives at events. All this changed when I joined the high school marching band. We practiced hard and worked without stopping. I soon realized that Cherokee County has pride in at least one program, their marching band.…

In 2006, I began my journey at The Valley School as a first grade student. Moving over from my previous school, which I had attended from the time I was three until I was six years old, was fairly smooth. I had friends who made the switch with me and, being the social butterfly I was, making new friends was a breeze. In the first few years as a student, I saw Valley move into three buildings.…

At the end of sixth grade, the junior high band came to my elementary school and performed for us. I watched in awe as students, not that much older than me, played music with their instruments. The flute players in the front row especially caught my attention; they were right next to the band directors and held their instruments up to the side, rather than down in front of them like the others. The flute had a high pitched melody and a bright silver color that appealed to me. That day, I signed up for the beginner band on the Coppinville Junior High registration sheet.…

The summer between my sophomore year and junior year was a life changing period. For one, my mother and I moved to Waco, Texas, an 8-hour drive from my home of Weslaco. Along with this new address, I also had a new school. Naturally, I went to the school nearest my home, Connally High School. I didn’t know it on my first day of school, but Connally High School would become my 2nd out of 3 high schools I would attend.…

Hard work and dedication had always been a song that lingered in the atmosphere of my childhood home. I am a product of immigrant parents who have worked diligently to guarantee myself the opportunity I have now. I am a nontraditional student, who like some people were forced to make difficult life decisions after the economy had plummeted, but today I stand as a Georgia State student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Managerial Science. The ability to be identified as a panther is admirable in itself, still the pride and honor that I have is the qualifications to join the Georgia State University Honor’s College.…

In the past year in band I believe I have contributed a lot to the band. Junior year I broke out of my shell and became more vocal during the season. This season I contributed to help my superiors teach and guide the ones struggling with their learning. I also believe I have contributed to make Marching Band even more fun. At football games I am one of the most spirited and the most “hyped”.…

I first met Jason in sixth grade, when I finally got sick of being a last chair second violin. Jason was the first private violin lesson teacher I had ever had, but far from my first private instrument teacher. Prior to him, I had labored through years of Suzuki piano lessons, and I thought I had a pretty good handle on the whole “private lesson” business. Oh, how wrong I had been. Jason was like no other music teacher I’d ever had, not only in the way he taught, but the impact he has had on me.…

I am very thankful for being a part of this class. It’s a great escape from the job to meet with others who are going through the same thing I am going through. The difference of this group is that we are heard regardless of who we are or where we come from. As I continue to read about the educators of the past, I wonder why there has always been some opposition towards music education. Was it too close to religion for some people?…
