Personal Narrative: Time Flies

Improved Essays
Time flies. My first semester as a freshman has ended. In my view, this is the most tiring semester I have ever had, because I have to stay up late and get up at seven o’clock; meanwhile, this is the most amazing semester I have ever had for the fantastic people I have met so far. Before I come to this class, my strength lay in reading, analyzing and understanding articles. I could always grasp the central idea of the article precisely, which is a gift inherited from my mother. In addition, I never have much difficulty in grammar usage because it is the part I have paid the highest attention to since English learning. At the same time, my weakness lay in organizing language logically. I considered myself as a person with poor logic, thus it was hard for me to give a clear and full explanation. As a result, after I came up with different kinds of opinions, I worried about making the full development of one argument. In addition, I had to spent twice as much time than my peers in finishing the journal assignment for each class, and this explains why I didn’t do well in class quiz. I thought slowly, typed slowly, and was always the last to finish class quiz. …show more content…
Looking back to all the writings that I have kept in one folder, I am surprised and proud that I can turn short paragraphs into long and complete essays. I am able to give clear thesis statement, integrate supportive evidence, and organize ideas in order. Besides, I have achieved progress in interpreting the author’s opinions and giving relevant feedback. Best of all, I have learned to analyze the quotation by referring to standard examples provided by the instructor. Now, there is no difficulty for me to write a long paragraph explaining a short

Hi Professor, I was wondering if you could take a look at my journal 5 ahead of time to let me know if this is what you were looking for. I am asking you this because I am very driven to get a good grade in this class and can't risk not doing so. I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Losing someone you watched suffer in their last days on earth doesn’t feel anything like losing a friend that was your age who had their whole life ahead of them, and losing both in less than a 2 month span doesn’t help either. The year of 2013 wasn’t the best year for me nor any of my classmates. For me it actually started when I was in the seventh grade, my mom received the rights to take care of my ill grandfather (her father). Turns out he was suffering from early age dementia; caused from drinking at an early age which happened to be 12.…

In two essays following my entrance essay, thesis statements became my biggest issue. I received a ninety on my entrance essay, so naturally I assumed that any future essay would only get better. This was not the case for me at all because instead of improvement, I regressed. The only way to correct my problem was to find the issue and figure out a resolution. Over the course of the semester, I have become aware that I still need to learn to write complete, specific, and fully developed thesis statements.…

As an English learner, I have experienced many challenges during the learning process, yet I haven’t given up my hope. Writing had always been one of my difficult challenges, but the desire inside of me learning new things always push me to accept the challenges. In fact, learning a new language stays always challenging to every person. However, English 111 class has taught me many things that I never thought I will do it. The first assignment that we did a reading response to Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Draft” has taught me that people learn from their mistakes, and nobody is perfect.…
