Personal Narrative Therapy Program Analysis

At the start of the program I wanted to work with children and adolescents dealing with a range of problems. I felt that my Catholic values of compassion, treating others equally, and kindness were enough to help community members. Through this program, my vision of helping community members expanded and the clientele had changed as well. I found myself interested in researching the effects and therapeutic techniques for trauma and loss. My curiosity in these areas of study sparked from my volunteer experience with the distress centre and a bereavement minister. These positions allowed me to interact with people coming from all walks of life and dealing with problems stemming from loss. My journey with loss began in my training as a bereavement …show more content…
I feel these theories and its techniques can assist me with clients of trauma and loss. What I like about collaborative therapy the way Professor Chris Kinman taught was that it was a natural conversation and connection with clients. It does not assume the therapist is the expert on the client’s problems and it is okay to not have the answers. The therapist journeys in conversation where the client wants to go. I also like that Mr. Kinman takes his therapy outside the confinements of an office into natural settings that are more unstructured. As for narrative therapy, I have seen how effective story writing and journaling is for clients with loss and trauma. I know these tools can help me with these clientele, however, at this point I only know the basics. I am intending on educating myself more into this philosophy and therapeutic …show more content…
Being in the counselling program, I had to write a lot of papers that were worth a large sum of my grade. Although, I still have anxiety about paper writing a few tips my professors and classmates have helped. My professors understand my paper anxiety. So, I email or talk to them ahead of time to get a better layout of how to write papers. Or I have them review it for structure prior to me handing them in. My classmates suggest that I try writing an outline to help me organize my thoughts. I am generally a creative writer, so structured writing becomes a challenge. After going to an internship interview, I realize the importance of writing treatment notes, goal plans, and treatment plan. I actually wished we had more practice with these

You did an outstanding job explaining the interventions you would use with Precious through narrative therapy. In your first meeting with Precious, you stated that you reviewed her case and recognized that she has endured many hardships in her life, yet she still has a smile on her face. This was a great way to start the session. You complimented her right from the start by recognizing her determination to have a better life. Precious would appreciate your initial icebreaker as she has limited self-esteem and probably has not had someone say something positive about her for some time.…

I appreciate receiving constructive feedback, since this criticism is valuable for me improving from my mistakes. Recently, I had been a leader of a group with whom I had worked on developing a new soda brand, for our entry in the Coca Cola sponsored, World Series of Innovation Competition. Being leader of this team, I encouraged my team to be open and give me their best suggestions. In this process I received positive criticism for my approach in leadership, feedback that I can apply to become a better leader. My group informed me that I took too much initiative to complete the unfinished tasks of some participants, rather than encouraging them to do this work themselves.…

To all the doctors, teachers, peers, and family members who didn’t believe I would amount to greatness, thank you. When I was young, I didn’t understand why school seemed more challenging for me than it did for everyone else. I couldn’t discern why I was unable to distinguish my right from my left no matter how many times my teacher sighed and told me it was simple or why I could complete math problems perfectly then copy my answer wrong between the work area and the answer line.…

When President Obama launched the Young African Leaders Initiative in 2010 to support the emerging generation of African leaders, this was to educate us to change Africa. I believe this Professional Development Experience is intended to give Fellows practical training and the opportunity to learn transferable skills, and apply theories learned in civic leadership classes in the real-world setting. As a leader, I seek to participate actively and productively in the field of global health leadership and health policy and to fill a strategic position in a multinational institution working on promoting health, particularly in Africa.…

My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. From the time I could speak, I saw family members, being taunted, by traumatic event that occurred throughout their lifespan. As I watched the hurt and pain of others consume them, I watch them suppressed the pain, in a harmful matter. For the future suppressing the pain, like substance abuse became an unconscious systematic coping method for stressors. Furthermore, as years progressed the hurt and pain presented itself through violence, verbal, and physical abuse.…

Narrative Therapy Narrative therapy was introduced with the chief objective of helping clients externalise their problems in order to separate the self from the problem (White & Epston, 1990; White, 2000; Wllis, Burns & Capdevila, 2011). The nature of narrative therapy assumes the client has sufficient inner resources; such as skills, abilities, commitments and beliefs, to alleviate the problem. Thereby, when clients believe their problems stem from their character, it is becomes more challenging to make changes and solve the problem (Bennett, 2008). Narrative therapy typically uses verbal means of externalisation, such as story telling, to help clients externalise the problems (Carr, 1988; Malchiodi, 2003) although other forms of expression such as art, has been found to be useful (Barron, 2016). Effectiveness on Self-Esteem.…

Since, clients possess strengths; the goal of this therapy is to use those strengths to solve their problem. (Gehart, 2014). This approach is interesting because it addresses the resiliency of the client and the client can build upon a strength-based foundation to work towards solutions (George, 2008). I feel that this approach can be applied in many different situations to build on the strengths and past successes than to correct the past failures or mistakes. Secondly, in this approach the therapist understands, accepts, and uses the client’s unique worldviews during the process of identifying and amplifying exceptions (George, 2008). Lastly, this approach uses the imagination of client to visualize the future through questioning that can allow for a clear picture of what the solution may look like even when the problem may not be clearly defined. I find one of my strengths through the use of the peer evaluation form shows that I have good techniques to ask the right questions to gain a better understanding of the problem the client is presenting.…
