Personal Narrative: The X Life Teen Program

Improved Essays
In high school there are various things to do, countless decisions to make, what to choose? The choices consist of art, dancing, sports, and so much more. With all of these oh-so-overwhelming choices, I found my place in the St. Thomas More Cougar Band and St. Pius the X Life Teen program. I have actually participated in the St. Thomas More Band Program since the eighth grade where I continue to be a member of the flute section. I first participated in the Life Teen Program, Edge as a seventh grader and I have remained an active member of the high school program. Both band and Life Teen have helped me grow spiritually, improve as a musician, and engage in community activities. While these two programs have proven to be fun and fulfilling, they …show more content…
As upperclassmen of the band, I have had to act as a leader and a model for the new members. In band, we have created a family, and in this family, the “older siblings,” more experienced members, help and instruct the “younger siblings,” newer members. As a member of the high school Life Teen program, I volunteer as a teen leader of the Edge Program. I have learned how to help and be a role model through both of these programs. These activities require members to not only have the qualities of a reputable leader, but qualities of a skillful instructor. As a leader, I must have the capability to give instructions and explanations as well as examples of what is expected. As a leader, I am taught to have patience when dealing with those I am leading or instructing. In band, it is easy to get frustrated when the new members do not get techniques right, but with patience I can help them without frustration. The same skill is incorporated in leading Edge because I have to have patience with those that do not participate. Having mastered patience, I am able to use it in my day to day life with friends and family. I obtained the skills of a patient leader and instructor, which are qualities used in my career plan of educating young

Beginning my sophomore year of high school, I had the privilege to become a member of Alma Folklorica de Oklahoma. It is a Mexican folklorico dance group in which we perform different dances from different regions of Mexico. Through this group I have learned many lessons on what a leader does, who a leader is, and what being a leader looks like. Each year we have new members join, as senior members graduate out. Usually your first year as a member consists of learning regions, learning the costumes and accessories for each region, and looking up to the veteran members for any doubts we may have.…

Growing up is tough. Every day people go through life with careers that they may not enjoy. Throughout the past few weeks I got the opportunity to interview two people about their jobs, one being a young adult who just started working, while the other was approaching her mid-life with an established career. The advice from both of these individuals was both eye opening and helpful. The age of the interviewee definitely influenced the responses I received.…

One indicator, of a teenager struggling to establish their identity, would be that the teenager begins to outwardly reject the establishment of their parents. This is usually the most notable conflict between parent and teenager as it creates a clash of ideals between the individuals. During this rejection and rebellion stage, teenagers may seek out religious practices that are different than their parents. By rejecting the preference of the parent; the teenager is not disregarding or discounting the religion of the parent, but merely searching for a religion that the individual can make their own.…

I now had the title of section leader in the band, and was also an upperclassmen of the football team. It wasn’t exactly as easy as it seemed from those of the past. The sophomores thought they knew everything just because they had been there one year before, and the freshman thought they were hot shit for making it through middle school. It was painful to witness the underclassmen of football only squat halfway down, or the underclassmen of band march out of time, and have your advice go in one ear and right out the other. I decided that I needed some type of legitimacy as a leader.…

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” -- John C. Maxwell. Being the drum major this past year, I have learned a lot about being a leader within the band. I would like to continue this position so I can keep the band on the great path it seems to follow. Leaders shouldn’t be perfect, that is the worse possible thing for them to be.…

At the end of sixth grade, the junior high band came to my elementary school and performed for us. I watched in awe as students, not that much older than me, played music with their instruments. The flute players in the front row especially caught my attention; they were right next to the band directors and held their instruments up to the side, rather than down in front of them like the others. The flute had a high pitched melody and a bright silver color that appealed to me. That day, I signed up for the beginner band on the Coppinville Junior High registration sheet.…

In a community, being a leader is often difficult due to all the components and struggles that go into being one. A leader is an individual who can take charge in various situations, and do it effectively in a way which makes others follow them. Throughout my years, I have grown from being a primarily shy person to someone who is not afraid to step up and be the leader I am now. Today, I am able to consistently demonstrate what it is to be a leader in my daily life. Although coming into high school as a freshman was intimidating for me, I knew that in order to succeed, I needed to open up and try something new.…

My vision for america’s youth today is that we focus less on the newest Jordans or the newest iPhone and focus more on issues that affect us because we are the one that inherit this earth. Materialism eats us from the inside out. Our society places significance on what you own—not who you are, it is sad and bitter fact. Many problems may arise and often do when young people embrace this culture of materialism. Lacking the means to acquire the much-valued material things, some individuals develop low self-esteem., especially for those of those of younger age.…

I drift in and out of sleep to the sound of Khalid's soothing voice as I make my way to my family's new home. My life changed drastically during the Summer of 2017. I graduated from high school. I moved from a quaint suburb in Connecticut to Charlotte, North Carolina, an up-and-coming, bustling city in the Bible Belt.…

But, it’s not just the previous drum majors I was influenced by; Nick, Michael, Vy, Mr. Sebastian, and my wonderful section leader Sarah also inspired me too. However, many previous drum majors had set the standards at a high level and it's my privilege and responsibility to maintain the tradition but at the same time help the band improve through words of encouragements. Even though I may not have a recognizable leadership position prior to this, one reason out of many reasons why I would be a successful leader is that I am very understanding with the people I’m working with. I know how to deal with problems that band members usually face because I was in the same position as they were, therefore, I will try my best to help them with any problems they might have as well as constantly learning from my fellow bandos to make self improvements. My goal is to motivate and inspire every member to keep pushing and practicing because if they strive for it, they will become successful.…

My Life as a Teen Mom I belong to a crowd of young, strong, independent teen moms. What does a “Teen Mom” actually mean? It’s a term that people occasionally bash us, teen moms, with. Most of the outside population blame us for being a teen mom because they say we ruined our lives and will never have a successful future. Some may say that a teen mom is just someone who gets pregnant and has a baby at a really young age.…
