Personal Narrative: The Women's Ensemble

It was a chilly 35 degrees Fahrenheit, a fairly cold temperature for the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina. The moon, and the stars shone brightly, or as brightly as they could through all the light pollution in the area. We were the Marvin Ridge Women’s Ensemble, an all female choir of high school students from grades 9 to 12, and we had decided to spread a little joy in our community by going Christmas caroling. We only sang one song at each door, but it was a marvelous 3 part medley of classic Christmas songs that we sing together as a choir every year, and have truly grown to love. Our passion for both this song in particular, and music in general …show more content…
That passion is what initially prompted me to join choir in the fourth grade, and what has compelled me to continue with it since. During my time in the Women’s Ensemble, I experienced the power of music, and gained important tools such as how to work together with others to complete a common goal, and how to be confident in myself, and my abilities. I learned that being in a choir has to do with a lot more than just learning the music; it is important to listen to others, to feel the music, and to take in mind other’s critiques. The fact that the choir room was an open environment was extremely beneficial; I got to know each and every one of the girls on a personal level, which allowed us to trust each other completely. We were not afraid to tell someone when they were out of tune, or had sung a rhythm incorrectly, and that greatly benefitted the music we created. It was the little, seemingly insignificant, things we worked that truly allowed us to create beautiful music on stage that touched us, and our audiences in unimaginable

The earliest I can remember learning that my gender was different and treated differently from someone else’s was probably when I was five or six years old. I always had to wear a dress or an outfit that was always pink. I had to play with dolls and only do things that little girls would normally do and I of course noticed that boys didn’t have to do anything similar to me so I realized that I was being treated differently simply because I was a girl.…

“One of the secrets of life is making stepping stones out of stumbling blocks.” –Jack Penn As my thoughts raced and mocked every ounce of confidence that I could have possibly possessed, I impatiently prepared for what was about to come. It was finally my time to be in the limelight—my time to share my God-given talents. I came from a shy and insecure mindset, but being chosen for the soloist position in a new style of worship would change everything for me.…

Over the last ten year I have grown into a very independent woman. Ten years ago I was 13 years old and pretty much dependent on my parents for transportation, food, and money. I imagine myself walking through Barnard’s black iron gates, leaving behind the fast pace and overwhelming excitement of the city I have always loved, and entering a place where faculty and students make up one community. I am enthralled by the prospect of learning beside other passionate women in an environment that encourages intellectual-curiosity. With its Nine Ways of Knowing, Barnard is dedicated to equipping young women with the confidence and skills that aided the success of Martha Stewart and Zora Neale Hurston. The ubiquity of great women and the outstanding academics is both empowering and awe-inspiring. A Barnard woman is strong, independent, driven, passionate and, as Professor Shu-Wen Wang said, “defines her life for herself.”…

Souza, I developed a role as music maker or musician with my instrument being my voice. Moreover, I was not required to sing, but it was my desire to sing that led me to be a music maker. Choir is such an incredible experience when you are a child or teen. This was a cultural ‘social outlet’ for me as well. The choir director made everything interesting and very participatory.…

I was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas; my environment shaped me to become someone responsible, an over achiever, and a determined young man. The people who had the biggest impact on me is the woman who gave me life, my father, and my community. My mother was already there for me even before I stared walking, she was there to comfort me when I fell on my knees. She was my first teacher, the one who taught me morals and set up my standards; whenever we had a family party and all of our thirty members were together, she will make me introduce and address myself to every single one and if ever forgot to say hi to someone she will just give me a look to make realize my mistake, and I will immediately go on to that person and say sorry for…

Respecting myself is what I consider to be one of my defining characteristics, so when I heard one of my male cross country teammates saying offensive things about me and my female teammates, I had to say something. At this time four out of the six girls on my team were dealing with some type of injury. Problems with our hips, knees, and ankles were some of the issues we were dealing with. This particular male teammate was saying things like, “Our girls team is really slacking right now.” In addition, he was mocking us by saying, “I can’t go to practice today because I have a hangnail.”…

Each year at my school, the male singers in chamber choir went to the state solo and ensemble competition and every year since 2008 they had returned with the state championship.
