Karen grabbed a paper from the writing center and put it on a tray. She reached for a blue chalk with her right hand. She used her left hand to hold the paper. Karen drew a circle then she grabbed a purple chalk and colored in the circle. She told a girl who was sitting next to her “I drew a sad face because you don’t want to be my friend.” Then, the teacher told her that it was time to go inside the classroom. Since she was still coloring, the teacher once again told her that it was time to clean up. Karen told the teacher “I am not done drawing.” The teacher replied “you can finish it later.” Karen walked

My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. Many of them do this and it contributes to the flow of the classroom and the engagement level of the entire groups. Students are expected to pay attention to the speaker during the mini-lesson by facing their way and not playing with any other items.…

After lunch, she marched the students up one by one and critiqued their sad scribbling. Finally, she finished looking over the very last paper and said "William, please come forward". Rising from his desk, William put one foot in front of the other and finally arrived, reluctantly, at her desk. Holding up the paper so William could see it, she asked, "is this yours?" When I was in six grade, my PE coach made it clear to me that I wasn't alone, and I could accomplish anything I put the time and effort into. He was the football coach for Atascocita middle school. An African American in his late 20s, very friendly, and Guidable when it came to his students. On the first day of school as a new student with no knowledge of the language, I was extremely terrified to transform from speaking different language, and having a similar set of friends into an inexperienced world and dissimilar students who I had absolutely nothing in common with. Fortunately, I had my brother as a personal translator throughout the year.…

I was born in 1984 and started school in 1989. Watching the movie The Bottom Line in Education 1980 to the Present, gave me a perspective of the Education system while I was growing up. I didn’t realize what my teachers and educators were subjected to. As a child I was very naive, which is what I was supposed to be. I never thought that my school was overcrowded or operating below any standards.…

As a child raised in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, my initial encounter with people from other backgrounds occurred when the school district started bussing kids across the city to largely populated white schools. While this experience took us out of our neighborhood schools, it provided an opportunity to meet students from other races, ethnicities, and religions which were different from me. Interacting with kids from various backgrounds helped me to be more open to different perspectives and not to prejudge. Additionally, the church I grew up in was very strict.…

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

What I Learned In Mrs. Hoffman’s Class You don’t realize how much of your childhood you spend in school. When you're a kid it seems that all you do is get up every morning to get on that yellow school bus that comes to your house every morning. There is something about the sound of a school bus stopping on the blacktop. Elementary school was the all the same every year I got a new teacher that was the person who taught me for the whole year;right up until the faith last day of school when the teachers would bring the creaky old cart full of board games and cards.…

Respecting myself is what I consider to be one of my defining characteristics, so when I heard one of my male cross country teammates saying offensive things about me and my female teammates, I had to say something. At this time four out of the six girls on my team were dealing with some type of injury. Problems with our hips, knees, and ankles were some of the issues we were dealing with. This particular male teammate was saying things like, “Our girls team is really slacking right now.” In addition, he was mocking us by saying, “I can’t go to practice today because I have a hangnail.”…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

In those few seconds, I knew we were going to be split up into girls and boys, however, I felt more accustomed to going with the guys then the girls, yet I stayed. It felt weird to say we were the oppressed group because we are women, yet I never felt that until I got into college. I never had to think about being a woman, only at times did I ask myself why was I born a woman.
