The Wicked Waterfowl Weekend
It was October 24, 2009, on a cold morning. My dad and I had wakened up at 5 am. We had been waiting for my cousin to pick us up to take us to his favorite duck hunting spot. We hopped in the pickup with my cousin and we started out toward Emmett. We had been talking a lot on our way out there catching up with my cousin I hadn't seen in awhile. As we arrive in Emmett we stopped at the first gas station that we knew sold hunting licenses. All three of us went inside talked with the clerk about hunting for a bit, then we all received our hunting licenses and migratory bird stamps. At this point, we were all legal and ready to slay some ducks. We pulled over off the side of the highway and my cousin jumped out and opened a gate to access the spot we were going to hunt. I felt nervous. I hadn’t shot my gun since I’ve had it. I wasn't sure how it would go. We drove on a dirt road for about 2 miles then he stopped the pickup put in park and said: “Let's go get ‘em, boys.”
We grabbed all the decoys, put our waders on, and loaded our shotguns. Then we headed down to the creek, to me it looked more like a canal. We threw all the decoys out into

That's when they informed us I'd have to get internal stitches along with external stitches. To start off the whole process they cleaned the wound then grabbed a needle and gave me 4 shots of numbing medicine on each corner of the cut. That was one of the most nerve-wracking things I've experienced, the needle was about 2 inches from my eyeball and every time he’d give me a shot I start to cringe but I couldn't close my eyes or it would stretch the cut and make it start bleeding again. Then they began stitching with 5 inside the cut and 20 holding the cut closed. Before I knew it I was done and on my

“Killing the Big One” It was just any ordinary day in January and deer season was in full swing. We had been hunting hard all season and I was still yet to get my first ever deer. I was being patient though and not trying to rush things because even at the sight of deer my heart would start pounding out of my chest! My dad would always remind me “You just have to breath and stay calm then aim at the front shoulder and squeeze the trigger.”…

So it finally snowed! I’m happy that it finally did and I built a snowman during the storm and it looks kind of…squared you could say. Since the snow is heavy, more of the leaves are now fallen off and it’s starting to look like winter. Today I went to my grandparents’ house to spend the few nights until thanksgiving. While driving out there, the corn fields and the bean fields were all covered with snow, you could tell that the deer were out and about since you could clearly see the footprints in the snow.…

We used to call it the Vistas. Everyday afterschool my friends and I rode the school bus through Miami-Dade until we got to the vistas at Walden Pond. Walden Pond was a place located on county line road. The county line split Dade and Broward County from each other. The vistas at Walden Pond were surrounded by lakes and a very noisy highway.…

I remembered walking on San Bruno Mountain as a six year old and seeing small, fuzzy blue butterflies fluttering in the spring afternoon. I thought about how lovely they were, and each year I looked forward to seeing them. However, as each year passed, I saw less and less butterflies. As awful as it was, I felt there had to be something I could do. It wasn’t until The Golden Gate Park Stewardship program gave me that opportunity.…

Rough Draft-Application Essay Ever since I was a little kid my family has been hunting and going out into the whitetail woods in hopes of getting a nice buck. I remember going out to my grandparents and seeing the deer my family had harvested that fall, and wondering when I could finally get to go and experience what it was like myself. I always watched my dDad come home and have a little buck in the bed of his truck and I thought how come it wasn’t like in the hunting shows where they go out and shoot a massive buck.…

I believe that the motto “Once a Falcon, Always a Falcon,” is a perfect motto to describe myself as both a person and student. Growing up, I always took pride of my hometown (Vermilion, Ohio). My hometown, paired with the rollercoaster of experiences I endured throughout middle school and high school, made me who I am today. Granted, there were hard times and struggles, but I would not be where I am today had I not grown from those experiences. As I stated in my application, I represented my school and hometown at the 2013 Buckeye Boys Convention.…

The Tongue-Tied Sea Witch "Jackie," my mom chuckled, "you're going to do great, trust me. This is your passion - embrace it!" I winced, squirming in my seat, fingering the seatbelt nervously, " Yeah, I guess you're right - maybe I'll be the only one who even shows up..." To be honest, I wasn't expecting any more than 15 hopefuls for a part in…

Some kids live and breathe for animals, and that was always me. My first word was “bullet ant,” or so the story goes. By the time I sussed I was a human being and not some weird sea lion, I was four. At zoos I actually asked my mom to read the information panels and sat there, thumb in mouth, while she sounded out tongue-twisters like “chances lupus.”…

The cryogenic chamber that housed my body, seemed to be in an isolated place on an unknown vessel. From inside, the constant rumble and clang of debris that interacted with the hull was disturbing the absolute silence. My heavy body and fogged over memories must have been a result from the deep slumber. I looked out the window and realized that the that earth was not in sight; inside the control room connected to my room, a counting device showed a sign of several light years. I assumed the device ought to be the distance of our travel.…
