Personal Narrative: The West Seattle Beach Run

Improved Essays
At the West Seattle Beach Run 50k yesterday, there were 23 runners. My friend, Anneke, and I were numbers 22 and 23 to cross the Finish Line. For the two of us, running 31.069 miles (an ultra-marathon) was NOT about finishing the race in a certain amount of time. It was NOT about finishing before any other people. It was NOT about running at a fast pace. It was NOT about attaining a new PR (Personal Record). It was about the act of running the distance and crossing the Finish Line. It was about enjoying the scenery. It was about running. It was about being active. It was about seeing the skyline of Seattle, right across the water, and thinking about how I've eaten dinner at the top of the Space Needle and how my great grandfather was a maintenance worker at the Smith Tower when it first opened. It was about running …show more content…
It was about pushing my body to its limits and beyond. It was about disregarding my disease and running further than I've ever run before. It was about putting my Multiple Sclerosis in a chokehold and keeping it there for eight hours, while I ran the race. It was NOT about beating the other runners to the Finish Line. It was about running and being essentially FREE for those eight hours. For those eight hours that my feet were pounding the paved trail, sidewalk and street, I was free of Multiple Sclerosis, the same as all my fellow runners, just running to cross that Finish Line and be able to say, "I did it!" After the race yesterday, my feet and legs were sore from running 50k and my neck and shoulders were sore from wearing my CamelBak with my 32-ounce water bottle in it for the duration. I took a super-hot shower and slept very well but I still hurt. Oh well. The pain will

While the 541,000 marathon finishers within the US all come from different backgrounds and have distinct differences, they are frighteningly similar in many aspects of their lives. Take for instance the level of training and determination each marathon runner has. Six out of the seven days every week for at least a couple months, they spend their days in the gym and out on the trails. One must build a body of muscle in order to complete the lengthy race – as is demonstrated by the father-son duo of Ken and Will Satre. Don’t let Ken Satre’s age or small stature fool you; he is a machine.…

I Corinthians 9:24 states, “Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you obtain it”. This Bible verse has had significant meaning to me particularly while running track in high school. Track is a sport that requires hard work, determination, speed, focus, and self-discipline.…

As I said “goodbye” to Johns Creek, I began venturing on a new journey. I would have slept on the long 8-hour expedition if not for the spectacular books that we had brought on the trip. As I grabbed the first book, it was like winning the best of the best. The book could keep someone busy for an entire 3 hours. The experience was as if the book was talking to me.…

“I can relate to the feeling of accomplishment although I’m not much of a runner myself,” (Mennemeyer). Accomplishments can come in any form whether it be in athletic events winning or achieving good grades in college. “I wouldn’t be able to comprehend what had just happened to the other people finishing before me at the finish line, coming the end of my race and see several people crying for help. I wouldn’t know what to do,” (Mennemeyer). Unstable both mentally and physically, only mobile with crutches from having an acl surgery seemed difficult but knowing some people lost a limb that was ahead of you in the race from a bomb was…

I can hear the whistle of the fall wind blowing as I lace up my trainers. It’s a beautiful fall day in the heart of cross country season. Today is a solo ten mile run. I chuckle as I think of an offhand comment made by my kindergarten teacher about how I could just run forever. I do not take much stock in fate, but it is amusing how prophetic that simple statement has been.…

“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
