In which we go Fishing
In Alabama there isn’t very much to do, but something that is common pastime is to fish. Now my granddaughter loved to fish. She would always be drawn to the tiny ponds to just stare at the fish swimming around. One day I had to watch her because her parents were on a business trip, supposedly having dinner with the prime minister of somewhere. When her parents dropped her off, I told her that we were going to do a surprise day trip. The car was all packed and ready to go. I had never done many interesting things like this so this was exciting for me as well. When we finally got to the lake, I pulled out the fishing poles. I rented us a small boat and we started heading out into the water.

For some reason, they would all go to her and not me. I got curious and ask her to switch rods and seats yet they still went to her. I start to get irritated and just stare at the water for awhile. After a little bit of time passes my granddaughter says something “ I turn my head and I don’t see anything. As I go back to my sulking, she says she sees it again. I turn my head once more and once again I see nothing. I tell her to stop making up stories and just go back to fishing. Then as I sit there staring at the water I see the giant fish go by. I whisper to her to stay quiet and very still and that we are going to cast our lines in the opposite direction and hope that it will get one of our hooks. It started moving in circles and taking our boat with it. As it spun us around, we fell into the water and our boat and fishing poles flew into the air. We swam back to shore as fast as we could, but unfortunately because the water was freezing all I caught that day was a

“A leader has to watch every word he or she says and quickly learns that you can’t go through life without a few critics, some well deserved” (pg. 5), this quote as some of the beginning words from MacDonald truly shows that a leader has responsibilities to uphold to. I found it interesting that he showed these responsibilities are not only external, but internal as well. Many do not realize the internal battles that leaders in ministry go through, and in order for leaders to handle a situation in a mature manner; they must uphold to the responsibilities of character they are expected to maintain. There are many internal and external expectations of leaders that are specified in Building Below the Waterline, but only some really stood out to me as factors that I would practice more than others in my leadership positions.…

When I was in tenth grade, in my marine sciences class we had a group project, in which we had to build three boats. It was the first project of the year, and it was a big part all of our grades. The boats could only be twelve centimeters by twelve centimeters at the most and could only be comprised of the materials provided in the class, tinfoil, two popsicle sticks, straws, tape, paper, etc. Each boat had to serve a different purpose, sail straight, hold thirty dice, or survive waves, and the group that built the boat that served its purpose the best received extra credit. My group consisted of Shane, Kyle, Isaac, and…

III At the airport, I caught a bus to the Detroit depot where I boarded another headed north through Saginaw and Bad Axe. We should have lived in Bad Axe I thought, and my thoughts made me sad as I took a seat behind the driver. The best thing about riding the bus was that the people who ride the buss had money problems or health problems; otherwise, they would drive themselves. Therefore, they kept to themselves and allowed the other passengers the freedom to remain silent.…

My previous camping trips I have taken in the past years have been memorable and full of hardship. I consider myself a very outgoing and adventurous person, that is why I go on crazy trips. Canoeing is my preferred way of traveling when touring lakes and rivers such as the Boundary waters and the Flambeau river. Major disadvantage of canoes is that they weigh up to 85 pounds. The weight matters being when crossing land to get to the next lake the canoe goes on your shoulders to carry it.…

We lugged buckets of tadpoles and observed with fascination when legs sprouted and tails disappeared. Many times, Grandma joined us, especially for an early morning fishing trip. She loved to fish, however her fear of water meant she always fished from the shore. She had reason to be afraid, both of her Grandfathers had died in the Wabash River. Our fishing excursions with her were quiet, which may be why we always caught more fish when she was with…

I put my red pole down on the ground, stood up, and walked over to the barrel trying to be as quiet as I could. I popped the lid off, grabbed the red scooper and scooped the brown, M&M size fish food up until it was full. I turned around and walked to the bank and threw the fish food out into the pond. Sitting on my white bucket, I reached out for my pole and nothing was there. I was outsmarted and outplayed.…
