A panel of three judges watched each of us try out. When the coaches called my number, I could hear my heart rapidly beating as I walked into the gym. At the end of my audition, I was announced as a JV cheerleader. After trying out for four days and knowing that there was a great deal of competition, I felt excited to be selected on the JV Sideline and JV Competition team. Several girls didn’t make the squad so I also felt honored to make any of the cheer teams. As a sophomore, once again, I earned a spot on the JV Sideline and JV Competition teams. Although I was not selected as a captain, I eagerly mentored and trained the new cheerleaders.
Thankfully, my name appeared on the Varsity Sideline cheerleading roster in my junior year. After two years of cheering, I had persevered and made a varsity squad. I also received a place on the Varsity Competition team, but I would serve as an alternate. That recognition felt bittersweet because the competition team always achieved top positions in the conferences.
