Personal Narrative: The Upper Body Machines

Great Essays
As of 2017, my mornings are fairly routine. I get up at about 5 a.m. so that I have time to eat, and drink any supplements I need to before heading to the gym and meet my pageant director. I find that getting up at this time to work out has some benefits. One of them is that I feel the pressure to actually get up and be productive, because I know someone is there waiting for me. Another is that I have someone to accompany me to all the machines in the area of the gym that I hate entering.. also known as the upper body machines. Ever since I can remember I’ve dreaded working out my arms; not only because I don’t really know what I’m doing, but because I’m afraid someone will notice exactly that and try to correct me; and not just anyone, a male. …show more content…
With no partner to meet, I pretended to be entirely occupied by reviewing the list of exercises my trainer emailed me; although I pretty much already knew where to go and what to do. With the gym full of people on their lunch breaks, I headed over to the lat seated row machine and began to warm up. After my first set, I noticed an older man out of the corner of my eye trying to tell me something. I removed one earbud to listen to what he was attempting to tell me. “Try this handle instead” he said enthusiastically. “Oh okay, thank you!” I replied short but sweetly. I couldn’t help but to be reminded of rule my father drilled into my brain.. always respect your elders. “And put your feet up here” he said as he pointed to the secondary area for foot placement on the machine. I switched out the handle and adjusted my feet then put my earbud back in, hoping he would get the hint and go back to his work out. But he didn’t. I hurried to try the workout with the modifications, in order to give him some feed back in hopes that he would then feel satisfied and continue with his day, but it only got …show more content…
And to my surprise, with another woman. Had he no shame or embarrassment from what had just happened? I saw him giving her a heavier hand weight and showing her “the right way” to do a bicep curl. Shaking my head, all I could do was think of how happy I was that it was no longer my problem. Within a few minutes I saw him doing the same act but with a new woman. I felt annoyed that I had wasted so much time trying to be polite to someone who obviously had resilience. And then it occurred to me that anyone who would actually be deserving of of my kindness would already know proper gym etiquette and wouldn’t be bothering me in the first place. Needless to say, I now have one more experience to add to my list of morning

As I walk into the gym my senses go wild. There’s many smells of sweat, weird smelling perfumes, and colognes. I finally spotted Coach Ed after scanning the whole gym for 2 minutes. He was standing by the bleachers at the far end, watching the kids like a 6’4 tall hawk. While I was walking towards him he began to laugh because I almost tripped over a cone while walking to him.…

One day my friend had me over to his house and we played games and ran around all night, then when it was morning we were bored and we decided we wanted to play a video game and we decided that we would fight to see who would get the comfy chair. Little did we know that it was not a good idea!!! We ended up fighting for the chair and he jumped on it and then I tried to get it by jumping on him and forcing him out but instead we spun around and around. I ended up falling off and was so dizzy that I stumbled and hit the fire plays head first and got a big old goose egg! I learned not to jump on a spinny chair, let alone with another person on it.…

Quitting the sport I loved had made me realize that I need to start setting more goals for myself. Before my injury, my goals were mostly just about gymnastics. Now I have to set different goals in real life, which is for the better since I cannot do gymnastics forever. Before my injury gymnastics was all I thought about and I also did much better in school, but I was also more stressed. Gymnastics has taught me so much, especially patience which is why I did so well in school.…

While most kids were outside playing in the mud and dirt, I was sitting inside on a couch, comfortable, clean, and happy to do so. As a child, I detested the idea of getting my clothes dirty. I loved to be able to maintain the pristine cleanliness of my outfit, so I often refused to play outside. Instead, I resorted to a crimson red Gameboy SP with a blazing LED screen, almost too big for my hands, for my childhood action. I’d live out intense fantasies in that three inch square.…

Chris Linde stated “My job as an athletic trainer is to prevent injuries as much as possible. I also support with strengthening and conditioning, guidance in nutrition and sleeping, and I also make sure the playing area is safe”. When he was young, he always adored being around the athletic trainer. Subsequently being pushed to his limits and fighting through the pain, there was always someone to care for his aches, and pains. She gave him opinions on what to do when he was alone to prevent fatigue, and serious injuries that would prevent him from playing to his fullest potential or limit him from achieving his goals.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

After maybe five reps I begin to feel all the blood rushing into my biceps and my upper back, feeling it widen in my shirt, feeling my muscles tighten and contract, this feeling, it is what I have been waiting for the whole day, I cannot live without it. I pull the bar down one last time it stops about five inches from my chest, I feel like I cannot do anymore, but I pull with all my strength. As my face turns a bright ripe red, I let out a grunt like no other and pull it all the way down to my chest holding it for about ten seconds then letting go slowly as I feel my muscle fibers begin to rip, making way for new ones to grow and fill them up, making them thicker, stronger, better. I stand up slowly and feel all the blood rush to my brain fast, it is like a high, a healthy high that you can never get enough of, that you crave from the moment you wake up to the moment you are laying in your bed thinking about the steel, the weight that you will lift, that…

When I was in sixth grade, a family friend had died from a heart stroke, it is when the flow of oxygen in one part of the heart is stopped. This inspired me to raise money for research for coronary heart disease, a disease that claims the lives of more Americans than any other disease. American Heart Association had an event at our school called Jump Rope For Heart. This event had an option for us to fund raise for the research of coronary heart disease through the team of Buzz Aldrin Elementary. I had choose to fund raise, but after I collected money with the team, I took a step further and created a personal fundraising page online through American Heart Association.…

“Blood, sweat, and chalk; never tears.” These words have guided my gymnastics career throughout high school. Pretty much starting from the beginning, I had to re-learn many skills and tricks that I had lost after quitting gymnastics for dance lessons in fifth grade instead of joining the competitive team. I lived for gymnastics and I still do. Walking into the gym always boosts my mood and gives me a rush of determination.…

It is my philosophy that hard work will always pay off sooner or later. Whether it be physical or mental, the reward is correspondent to the amount of effort put in. In 10th grade, I had back surgery that rendered my back weak. I set the very difficult goal of regaining my strength and working hard the next year in order to make varsity the following year. My ambition moved me to go to physical therapy and give it 110%.…
