Surrounded by a team of nurses, one doctor, and what seemed to be a grouping of blinding lights, I had a peculiar moment of serenity. I can’t quite explain whether it was the epidural or the fact that for twelve hours my body was engulfed by excruciatingly painful contractions which seemed to be attacking me in a sporadic manner, but in that one moment everything was perfect. Somehow I just let go off every single fear I had, I just remembered that in any moment there would be an extraordinary occurrence. Although a natural part in many women’s lives, since the beginning of time, it was a phenomenon in my life.…

My boyfriend of three years broke up with me; my heart was shattered like a mirror on the ground, cracked and pieces missing. I never thought that this would affect me so much. I couldn’t let everyone see how upset I was, so I hid my emotions behind a fake smile that no one ever knew existed. That is where all my problems started; something started to grow inside of me like an embryo of a new unborn child. Slowly but surely I sank into a dark abyss of depression.…

She finally had given up on her long battle with breast cancer. Ms. Jane was one of the sweetest neighborhoods old ladies you can say who always had a store house that attracted many people both young and old for her famous sweet potatoes pies, which she sold for Two dollar and Twenty-Five cent. When I received the news after coming home from class my brain felt as though it wanted to bifurcate and it had shattered.…

I am the oldest child. I have two younger siblings who I love unconditionally, but life as the oldest child is not the picnic most people think it is. I know this probably sounds cliché, becoming who I am because of my siblings, but it is the truth without them I would not be the person I am today. When I was four years old my mother became pregnant with my sister. My sister, Madison was born seven months before I turned five.…

He and his mother chatted with my sister for some time before they left.…

For my second entry of my integrative report I had another one-on-one interaction with Jacob, the three-year-old boy from my last entry. Jacob is a false name I will be using throughout this report for confidentiality purposes. This visit was very similar to my last visit as I babysat at the home of the child and we visited the park down the street. Much like the last time we played in the basement, which had lots of toys to play with and a television. Jacob is part of a traditional nuclear family as he has both a biological mother and father who he is dependent on (Shaffer, Kipp, Wood, & Willoughby, 2013, pg.…

In October of 2005, I was in the visitors lounge at New York Presbyterian Hospital awaiting the results of my mothers’ mastectomy. As an adolescent, I had insufficient knowledge of cancer; a disease that has negatively impacted the lives of many throughout the world. Although I did not know much about cancer, the sight of my mother in a hospital bed was just as excruciating a feeling if I had known every detail of her condition. As doctors informed my family of the success of her surgery and the removal of the tumor, thankful but also in fear that the most important figure in my life would lose to the battle of cancer if the disease were to return. As I recollect sitting by my mothers’ bedside that that night, embracing every second knowing she was still there to guide me throughout my childhood, I realize that every moment…
