I need to cut these ties with them and become my own person, I need to become independent. I, as a teenager, have written this Declaration of Independence to show why I am going, why I need, to become independent. In achieving life, liberty and happiness I am going to be an independent person and do as I wish to achieve my unalienable rights.…

In the United States, people pride themselves on equality, justice and on what is morally right for the American people. Although this statement allows for the country to parade around as unified people, under the tapestry is something far more sinister. Even though laws have been passed in the not so distant past, people of the the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, or the LGBT community, are discriminated against daily. This includes places of work or school, businesses, and even on the streets, people apart of the LGBT community are alienated because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. This backwards system still seems to baffle many Americans, because it is not natural for a human being to be persecuted for…

A “right” is a word only given meaning in the context of actual or imagined oppression. The “right” to vote, the “right” from slavery and forced labor, and the “right” to reign all conjure up differences in their applications. Who and when are the most pertinent differentiations between the haves and have-nots. A right is a right only if it can be taken away through actions or ideologies and granted by a higher power; be that God, the Law, or an imposer of oppression. While humanity may have innate rights such as those listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), no human is born with rights.…

Taking Good Action in Different Societies Obviously, I am more of a Chinese than an American, but since I spent most of my past five years in a high school in Alabama, I understand a lot more about Alabaman society than about Chinese society. Therefore, it is no surprise that every time, when I return to Shenzhen, China, for summer holiday, I will be surprised by almost everything. I believe this is due to both the rapid development of this young city and of myself toward maturity, which enables me to generate different reflections each time I come back to China.…
