Personal Narrative: The Unitarian Universal Church

Improved Essays
The Unitarian Universal Church that I went to was in Lexington. The building was the classic old white church with a steeple. In front of the building was a park, to the right side was the graveyard associated with the church, and in the back was parking. The church was along a semi-busy road. The building from the outside looked like a classic church with white wood with a steeple. On the inside entryway, it looked like a house in a way because it had normal looking red carpeted stairs on both sides, but with large dark wood doors leading to the nave. The nave had dark pews with padding on the seat. Hanging from the ceiling were chandeliers. At the front was a podium with an organ behind. The chorus also stood at the front, to the left of …show more content…
Next there was “Welcoming and Greeting One Another,” this was different from the church I go to because instead of saying “peace be with you,” the congregants would introduce themselves to each other, or if they know the people around them, they would talk about how their weeks went. This was to help them receive the social dimension. Next the choir sang “Take Me Back, O Hills I Love” this song was to get people to focus back on the mass. The Reverend Rankin gave the call of worship, which was just used to start the mass, and get the congregants to feel more in touch with the church and the reverend. The opening hymn was after, this is used to start out the mass and the hymn picked will help set the mood for the rest of the mass and to praise God. Next was the Chalice Lighting and response. The response mentions the chalice being a symbol of unity. The chalice lighting was used bring the congregants and the church together. Next was the Unison Affirmation, the first line of this was “Love is the doctrine of this church.” This chant was also used to connect the congregants with the church, and its doctrine. There was then a passage about Moses, it, unlike the church I go to, was not a direct passage from the bible, but it was translated for the younger kids in the audience to understand. After this was read the congregants would sing a departure song sung to

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

One prayer that was made during the service talked about the concept of Tikkun Olam. The speaker asked us all to pray about how we would fulfill our own visions of this concept. Most notably, in the prayer book there were sections where portions of the prayer were replaced with different pronouns for god besides “he”. In addition there was even a section for nonbelievers that I read after the service. The section started out with a quote from Albert Einstein and recited a prayer about science and how everything is…

On Sunday, May 1st I attended a Catholic mass hosted by Reverend Gilday at Little Flower Catholic Church. The church was divided into 3 sections, north, south, and west of the altar in the center. It was a traditional mass given on the Sabbath, a required day of worship. He gave his speech through a homily during the mass reflecting upon the reading from the bible, but he also created a unique message driven from this reading. He started off the speech with a comfortable confidence and soft-spoken yet attention-grabbing speaking voice.…

They used a variety of instruments to accompany their hymns as the church sang along harmoniously by reading lyrics screened from a projector. The music wasn’t quite as exciting or uptempo as I would like them to be but after all this wasn’t a pentecostal church. Overall, the music was enjoyable because it was performed live but lacks a wow factor based on the melodies and lyrical content. The overall vibe of the church seemed very traditional compared to my experiences at my non-denominational church.…

As I sat down I discovered not too surprisingly everything is written in Hebrew, although the programs are in English which given you a heads-up describe of the order of service. Upon arrival in the beginning, I felt a bit uneasy and out of place, I guess it wasn’t all bad for I could take notes at my leisure, no one spoke, of course there was an occasional nod here and there, in any event no one spoke before, during, or after the service it was quite uncomfortable. However, obviously, this was not about me personally, it was about a young boy becoming a man of faith, and his proud family. This was a sacred time; this service is commonly open to the community to watch children come to an open declaration of faith.…

I had similar experience, which was explained in No.1, on the edge of entering. I was church shopping when I came to the USA 20 years ago. I went to almost every church in the town. I didn’t feel welcomed, most churches wanted to convert me to Christianity in spite of telling them I am a Christian. For most of them since I am from India I am a Hindu and I need to be converted to Christianity.…

There are many things I am grateful for in my life, but I am most grateful to have the freedom of religion. In many other countries across the world there are a multitude of people being tormented and killed for their beliefs. There have been men, women, and children who have died because they believe follow Jesus. So if there is one thing I am thankful for it is to know that I can belive Jesus to be my savior and know I will not be killed because of…

They continued to keep us involved by teaching us the sign for peace, when saying peace be with you. This made for a very positive and educational experience. In addition, while at mass I noticed how inconvenient things like the layout of the room can be. A giant pole, which held up the balcony, was in the center of the pews that we were sitting in. This blocked the view of the interpreter for nearly half of us.…

There were many different times throughout the service in which someone, the priest or the person who read scripture, said something and the congregation responded. Similarly, there was more than one prayer that was said out loud from memory. Another ritual in the Catholic church that does not carry over into many Protestant churches is kneeling in the pews during certain times of prayer. Likewise, the Eucharist, or communion, in Catholic Mass was another ritual I was unfamiliar with. Though I have participated in communions in Protestant churches for much of my life, I had never seen it happen the way it did in Mass.…

Everyone we ever encounter has a passion for something in their life, whether they're are open about it or not. It can be crotchet, sports, reading, or, one of the most popular passions, music. We can't help but share it with whomever we come into contact with. Just being able to share your passion and having those you care about experience it with you is such an amazing thing to witness. Our walk as Christians should be just like sharing our passions, except in this case, the gospel is our passion.…
