Ever since I was a young girl, I wanted to teach and travel. My Nana, who is my mom’s mom, always took me on adventures to allow me to see sights that would inspire me in future endeavors. It was our very first trip to Washington D.C. that drew me to appreciate the world of travel and embrace the differences of various locations.
Most eighth graders are given the opportunity to travel to D.C. to embark on an endeavor to experience the foundation of our country. It was a week of craziness filled with new sites, smells, and 128 of my closest friends. The week flew and though we learned a lot, I left feeling that there

The first happened on day two with two women relatively close to my nana’s age. They informed us of their experience with the same awful storm that put us in a delay for our original arrival day. They got stuck outside in it and had to delay all original plans for the next day. We had small talk for quite some time and really developed a friendship in the time we were together. The second encounter, which was my most favorite, was a couple from Sydney, Australia. Their accent was the most beautiful sound to my ears, and their hearts were pure gold. They would get on the bus before us and save us seats. This encounter happened our final day in D.C. and they traveled to many of the sites with us that day. We learned about their family as they did ours, and its a friendship I will never forget. Meeting new people is not always on the agenda for individuals when they go on trips, but I learned that you realize a lot from

I was sent to a hotel for a total of 10 days, alone with absolutely no one I knew. During this time period I had met numerous students between the ages of 14 and 18 years old. Each of these students had been from a different state, town or city. They each had different backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles, even diets. It was when I had actually started to talk to these people I had realized, I was not in Florida anymore.…

It was not very eventful, other than the fact Tanner got us lost and we ended up in the middle of the road about a football field away from our cabin. We remained on the paved trails that time, but we passed by a side trail that was only made up of trees and dirt. The group talked about maybe going there the next morning, but I was not sure if I was welcome to come along. At least not until they talked about it, agreed on going, and turned to me and asked, “Are you…

People who travel at an early age do succeed in their schooling and jobs. Rather than taking away from time when they could be studying, traveling provides a different sort of education for students and young adults, proving to give them a boost when they look for jobs. Author of, “How Millennials are Changing Travel,” Amanda Machado, states that, “My travels helped me obtain a summer job with Global Glimpse, an organization that takes disadvantaged students on educational trips through Nicaragua” (Machado). For Amanda, traveling secured her a paying job for the next stage of her life. Through the experiences she gained while traveling, she learned and grew as a person enough to be ready for a career in…

I spent six of my summers growing up at an all girls camp called Wavus. Wavus is a wilderness tripping camp in Maine based out of my hometown, Jefferson. Living in Jefferson, I did not obtain a great deal of exposure to other people from the country, let alone other parts of the world. When I went to Wavus I was put in a cabin with girls from all over the United States and even one from Belgium. Having to live with these girls for a month each summer enabled me to become close friends with them and learn about their lives.…

I was meeting people who had gone through hell and back to make it here while I got here solely because of my parent’s hard work. These people helped me explore my compassionate side by telling me their stories of exactly what it took to come here. I grew incredibly thankful for the opportunity to meet and help these strangers and began making constant adjustments to my own life based on their story’s incite. For example, starting sophomore year I started missing the school bus to stay after school and then walked 2.5 miles home every day I needed to. If I had to baby sit that day, I would probably walk them to school with me and turn the trip into a Pokémon Go quest.…

In many ways I am similar to most seventeen-year-old boys: I enjoy playing sports, eating colossal amounts of food, and hanging out with friends. However, I also enjoy playing the saxophone, taking tests, and doing carpentry work with my father. I have worked hard to become a starter and captain in two sports, and I have earned the best grades possible at my school. I believe my experiences of stepping outside of my comfort zone and pursuing interests outside of the ordinary have given me a foundation on which to build the next level of my education.…
