I don’t know why I had such high hopes that I'd make the team, seeing how I was new to both high school and the sport. However, I knew I shouldn’t give up, and that I will eventually make the team.
Over the summer before my freshman year in high school, I was determined to be on a sports team. I never played a sport before, and yet, I had high hopes that I could possibly make the tennis team. Tennis always intrigued me, despite the fact I don't watch tennis matches, or know any famous tennis players, except for Serena Williams. I chose tennis because I wanted to try something

People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

I became passionate when I was recognized by a high school coach at something I thought I was doing inadequately at. Meanwhile, over the time I have developed and was awarded the MVP award. In 2009 at West Middle School, I was in the eighth grade and heard that the school was having tryouts for the new volleyball team. Although I didn’t care too much about it, but my cousin Shantel and…

There has not been a team in the school history to ever win the team title for girls golf. It was a warm April afternoon. Everyone on the softball team was dismissed at 9th period (2:15 p.m.). We waited for our bus to come and take us to Upper Perk. When everyone loaded the bus, you can smell confidence in the air. As the 7th and 8th grade teams waited for their coaches and the bus, we sat and talked about how bad the hallway smelled because it was the hallway to the boy’s locker room.…

Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…

“Alright Linds, just remember-- since you’re the captain, it’s your job to be in charge of ordering warm ups,” my coach warned me. That one little sentence made me cringe. I was now in charge of selecting the warmups, gaining consensus, collecting money, and purchasing them for the Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team. A couple of days after I was delegated to be in charge of warm-up duty, I realized I should just accept the responsibility and stop putting it off any longer.…

I was filled with anger and frustration, covered in sweat, standing at the serving line in my backyard preparing to serve. I held the ball in my hand, hoping and praying my serve would go over the net. I tossed the ball in the air and hit it with all of my might. I watched the ball come off my hand, my heart beating a thousand times a minute. When the ball hit the net, my heart sank and all I wanted to do was scream and cry at the same time.…

THE EIGHT FOOT CIRCLE “Stand up for what you believe in even if that means standing alone”. When I was younger and got my first opportunity to stand up for myself without anyone pushing me to succeed things didn't go as planned. Although I didn't succeeded I took a lesson from it in the end. “Play ball” the umpire called out as we jogged on to the field. Like every game before I headed for third base.…

I was standing by myself on the bright green tennis court, gripping my racket. Groups of other tennis players were leaning against the chain link fence, waiting, like me, for tryouts to begin. Listening intently to the conversation going on around me, I was trying to get absorbed into what was going on. After what felt like forever, but in reality was only minutes a friend of mine and returning player walked over to me. Having not seen each other in a month or so we both greeted each other enthusiastically.…

After crying for a few days I made the toughest decision in my life, to quit tennis. The thought had been mulling over in my head for a few days, heck, a few months; I would imagine a world where I had no difficulty juggling a STEM high school and a competitive sport that I would practice for 8 hours a day. But, sadly, that alternative world does not exist. Honestly, playing tennis and trying…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
