The Swim That Kills
37% of American adults said they could not swim more than 24 yards. Some people could say that I have a hydrophobic fear of swimming. I just say I can’t swim. I survived swimming by just trying harder in gym class and I got better as the grades go. Some may know I don’t like swimming. This is why I think I don’t like swimming. My mom has a hydrophobic fear for water because my mom had to swim in school and she said it was terrible. Another reason is I can't float well in the water. I can't float well because I have never been swimming before in my life, which leads into the next reason I have never been swimming before until I got to middle school. Before 5th grade I have never been swimming before in my life.

Today, it would be difficult to imagine who I would be without swimming; it has become such a major aspect of who I am. Even though I may have always been at a slight disadvantage because my arm span and leg length are smaller than that of my competition, I feel that I have established myself in the sport of swimming. It is a passion of mine that I have built up over years and years of dedication. I never have and never will let my height difference turn me away from the sport. It’s easy to quit something for reasons beyond one’s control, but in swimming, I have been able to improve my strength and mental capacity so that I can make up for the lost distance attributed to my height.…

I remember my uncle taking my cousins and I to Duns River Falls in Jamaica. At the bottom of the falls he took me from the shallow ends to the deep end, a good area where my head remained above the water if I stood on my tippy toes. My uncle laid his arms underneath me and taught me to relax and float. From time to time he would slowly remove his arms, allowing me to float without his support. I would freak out when I realized that his arms where no longer there holding me.…

Yosemite When I was seven, my family and I entered the enchanted forest known as Yosemite for a campout. It seemed as trees decided to invade the barren Earth. As I stepped out of the car, the smell of sticky, brown sap running down a maple tree smashed my face like an arrow pinning its target to a barrier. The sap threatened to suffocate me with it’s sulfurous smell.…

When I was 11, I found out that I had exercise-induced asthma. And since it only happens when I exert myself, some people don't really see it as having asthma. So for six years, I had been deliberately not using my inhaler for certain types of exercise. I thought I could train myself into being tougher because I don’t really have asthma—only sort of. Swimming was one of the activities where I chose not to use my inhaler because I had always been fine before.…

The Media This past summer, reports of dry or near drowning experiences kept many families away lakes, pools and the like. People.com, formerly known as People Magazine, interviewed one family to share their story. Despite warnings, the Delgado family were not deterred from having fun in the sun this past Memorial Day weekend at the Texas City Dike (“Boy-Four-Dry Drowning,” 2017). However, little did they realize that later in the following week, they would lose their 4-year old son Frankie to what the hospital could only explain as dry-drowning.…
