Personal Narrative: The Student Culture At Northwestern

Improved Essays
“Well, it’s nerdy, but in the best way possible,” tends to be my response when people ask why I want to go to Northwestern. That answer, however, doesn’t truly do justice in understanding why I wish to be a wildcat. Being "nerdy in the best way possible" implies much more than stated. From the enthusiasm and optimism of students as well as the academic opportunities available, Northwestern is a prized school.
For me, the student culture at Northwestern is one of the most exciting aspects of the university. Students, from what I've observed, are both highly-motivated and supportive, a combination that may otherwise seem mutually exclusive. Like most Northwestern students, I wish to double major, in my case, in Sociology and Economics, and

As a first time student attending Spokane Falls Community College, I honestly thought that the only buildings and areas of campus involving my class schedule would be of importance. Little did I know that one room I would encounter would become my safe haven. I remember the first day stepping out onto campus and all I saw was a giant riddle waiting to be solved so many parking spaces, buildings, rooms, classes, and students. The anticipation bubbling up inside of me was exciting and rooted with a little nervousness. I was searching for place to keep me focused on my goal of being a successful student, a place to refresh between rigorous lectures.…

Everyone is given a name at birth that is unique and special to each individual. This title travels with them wherever they may go and whatever they may do. Malia Hi’ilani Mae Kema was the verbal gift given to me the day I was born. It is a name that I hold dear to my heart because it carries the love of my ancestors.…

As the semester comes to a conclusion, so far I have been very satisfied with my performance thus far here at Slippery Rock University. Being in college has really given me the opportunity to meet so many new people that have been able to positively impact in such a big way. May it be through helping me study for exams or just a great group of friends that I can go hang out with. Don’t get me wrong there most definitely has been some rocky moments here and there but I feel that I really pushed through those moments and have made the best out of them.…

I have gone to the same school all my life with less than 200 kids in my class. A lot of my peers I have known since kindergarten or even preschool. My life is very routine. I go the same route to school everyday, talk to the same couple of friends, and then go to dinner rotating between the same four or five restaurants. I had an amazing childhood and I love my family and friends, I am ready for an experience that only NYU can offer.…

Hamilton took me by surprise. I knew it was a small liberal arts college, but I had no grasp on how unique and genuine the community was. So many people said hi to my tour guide, Emily, as she showed me around -- including the line cook in the dining hall! I also heard how a student emailed 10 alumni to help her with something, and all of them replied to her. This kind of close-knit, loving family is what I want in a college experience.…

Esteban Osorio English 15A Zachary Clough February 18, 2016 A College Student’s Needs 18 million students are enrolled into college every year in the United States. Coincidentally, each student will be required to gain access to the internet as colleges become more technology dependent. With so many different kinds of computers out there, it can be a daunting choice to choose the correct one for their specific needs and that can readily meet their necessities for the years to come as a student. The MacBook Pro was the pc I went with, and it was an excellent choice although there are plenty of other options that are equally as worthy.…

One decision—more like a hilarious joke taken seriously—altered the future of my academic career. While sitting with a group of friends in the student center on the day of the Student Government elections, I thought, “Oh hey, wouldn’t it be funny if I wrote my name in on the ballot”? I got several peers in on this “prank”; we cast our votes, laughed, and thought nothing of it. Two weeks later, I was called in for an interview by the newly elected president. In retrospect, I realize my true motive and how much I actually toyed with the idea of being on the executive board; I knew I could rise to the occasion, and how ludicrous it would be to throw away my shot at making a lasting impression on the student body at Sandhills Community College.…

Reminiscing back I vividly remember my brother and all the other notable alumni dawdling across the stage which seemed to be a navy blue army of education individuals at Health Policy and Administration graduation. It was at that moment I realized I wanted to continue a new Finner family legacy of being a Penn State student. Over these past few months I have questioned my abilities of continuing this legacy because I was too focused on statistics. As I was engaged in deep conversation with my brother that I realized, I am not a statistic. Growing up with three older brothers who have all strived in every aspect of their life and a struggling single mother who knew absolutely nothing about collegiate education has definitely molded me into…

Hello University of Chicago reader. I appreciate the time you all at the admissions office have taken to reach out to kids like me. To be honest, I’m writing this during the gaudy presentation my school hosts for cap and gown, run by an independent company. Flashes of jewelry imprinted with a metal number 18 on it are gracing the screen on the auditorium stage, and the cloaked (metaphorically) salesman speaks of the beauty of the rings bonding with the importance of remembering the past. The opportunities that I’ve had in high school, along with the community I’ve been in, are important to me, but I doubt buying a 3000$ ruby ring with ‘CDS’ carved into it would assist me in learning from my four years of experience.…

It is often hard for people to describe themselves and think how they can make a positive presence on a university. I’ll admit when I first started typing this essay I stared at this blank document for some time thinking to myself, ‘How in the world can I describe myself and how could my presence affect Trine?’ Then finally one word came to mind on how I would describe myself. This word is understanding; I am a very understanding person and this trait has helped me greatly throughout my life. Growing up as a biracial child was anything but easy for me.…

Several challenges occurred during my college career. I worked throughout the majority of my education to pay for books and tuition. My parents helped with the costs of attending college as well as supporting me when my studies became difficult. The experience of being the first in my family to work towards a bachelors degree meant a lack of guidance and advice. I sought out the advice of an adviser who I have been working with for the past three years.…

In psychology, every student learns about the mere-exposure effect; a psychological phenomenon by which people tend to develop a preference for things because they are familiar to them. For myself, Dickinson College is right in my backyard and has always been in my thoughts. As I developed my interest in Dickinson during my early years of high school, I decided that I wanted to be involved in Dickinson life as much as possible. At that time, I would sign up for two college visits that provided great knowledge about the campus and all Dickinson has to offer. Once I saw the campus I decided to partake in a day visit where I would acquire a feel for the classes in the archaeology department.…

The path towards college has not been easy it has been filled with complications.
