Ever since I started playing, I’ve always loved the game of basketball and the exhilarating rush that it gave me. My favorite aspect of it was being part of a team and seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces as the ball went through the hoop and we scored a few points.
One day, I began to have chest pains; thinking that it was completely normal for an athlete, I ignored it and continued to play basketball. The first time I couldn’t breathe was in practice a few years back, I told my coach and went straight to the trainer. It was like a million bricks were sitting on my chest, making it unable to breathe. The trainer had me do a few exercises to get my heart rate up and decided I should see my doctor to decide if I had …show more content…
Anxiety is something that most high school students and athletes have; due to grades, family, friends, stress etc. I dealt with anxiety mostly by running away, leaving school saying I did not feel good which eventually lead to truancy. My mom and I had to go to the courts and wait a few anxious hours to even get in and than the judge had to decide what my punishment was going to be. I realize then that it was time to change the way I acted with this condition. I started looked up ways online to cope with anxiety and I tried out some of the methods and they worked for the time being. This was the beginning of my struggle to recover from my condition. I feel like that was negative influence on my team because it got in the way of not only mine, but their performance as well. This caused them to not talk to me much anymore because they were all trying to prosper in life and I was still stuck in the same spot in life, not getting any better, just staying the same. Getting back into training has been a little bit easier since I’ve been going to the gym, also I found out that drinking lots of water helps. Another thing that helps is taking deeper breaths instead of quick paced breathing. What I plan to do within the next year is overcome my respiratory breathing issue, and hopefully get a basketball scholarship for college.
I have a goal and I am dedicated to achieving my goal. To this day, I still do not know what caused this condition. Realizing that this has changed my life forever, one good thing that came out of it was that I actually found out what I had instead of always asking/getting told that I had asthma. When I was a younger child, I use to run everywhere, loved to go to the park and places like Hocking Hills with my family. I want to try and motivate students/athletes to become the best that they can. I’ve been knocked down time and time again, but I’ve always got right back
