One day, when I was in 8th grade, I was doing my work. Usually, I wouldn't talk and I'd just sit back listening. During this time, we were discussing politics and the subject of Donald Trump arises. An African American child raised his hand and says that white people were voting for Donald Trump. I shot my hand up and said "Although I am white, my family is NOT voting for Donald Trump." Consequently, he intensifies the situation by describing that African Americans, along with Latinos, were going to be deported. Immediately, I felt disrespected. To the ones who believe asking, “What are you?” is a valid conversation starter, I am multiracial and proud, but to simplify my ethnicities to others when asked, I identify myself as Asian. I was stereotyped because of how we are perceived in media and society. I spent years cowering in my own skin because others made me believe I was not Asian because of the size of my eyes, the color of my hair, and my personal interests. I was ashamed of what I looked like since I was convinced it embodied who I am as a person.…

Visions are only unique as the individual themselves who make up this country. America is not the same as it was ten years ago. Who would have thought that we would have cell phones that were similar to a small computer in our pocket, a car that could talk back to us, or that we would have an African American president? Our visions for America could change everyday. My vision for America is very unique for my age group.…

When I was writing my six, six word memoirs the hardest one for me to create was “Life's a party, just RSVP”. Only because I was not sure it made perfect sense. The easiest one for me was “ I'm a rebel I use Wikipedia.” It was the easiest for me because last year it was a joke with some students in the my english class. My favorite six word memoir I wrote was “ Trump is making America great again”.…

I just remember the way he said it- the way he said ‘Illegal Immigrants’ while looking right at me. I did not know how to explain what I was feeling, but I knew it was a sign that I was different than the rest of my classmates. I was one of the few Latino students that had to take a bus to a different school, I was placed into that system by a test. I remember guessing in everything, and by chance, I got the majority of them right.…

I did attend the Republican debate and it was like some 5 years kids yelling at each other. Yesterday was "Super Tuesday", the day when 11 states held their presidential primaries. Clinton swept through the southern states creating a significant delegate lead over Bernie Sanders. Trump seems invincible now after winning most of the 11 state primaries. I don't know what's happening to America.…

On October 4th, the first and only vice presidential debate was scheduled to take place. Personally, I am not familiar with the role of the vice president other than to break ties in the senate. I didn’t have any idea what to expect from either of these candidates, other than to hear them defend the presidential candidates whom they will serve beneath. I predicted a stronger debate than the presidential debate and a win for the Democratic Party under Tim Kaine.…

How It Feels to Be a Minority Never have I ever felt that I have an ethnic identity, and I have never known what it is like to belong to a minority group up until I came to Hartford. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines minority as a group of people who are different from the larger group in some way such as ethnicity or religion (“minority”). Via two encounters in Hartford, I realized that I also belong to an ethnic group, which had never determined my idnentity before. In Hungary, the population is not really diverse.…

Polarized thinking is conceiving of thinking as absolute opposites such as good or bad, right or wrong, or male or female. As this vocabulary indicates, some words separated people for gender by how the person call his/herself. In English, there are Mr. or Mrs. to show the person’s gender. In my language, Japanese, has a lot of words which separates people’s gender. One day in my elementary school life, one of my girl classmate suddenly stated to call herself with a pronoun which indicated only and totally for boys.…

Really, I can do it! I never believe that there is a day when a timid person like me dare stand up to protect myself in front of others. Three years ago, I decided to move to the United States with my husband and my son. Three months after, I realized that my broken English prevented me from communicating with people around me and from adapting myself to this new, challenging environment. Therefore, I got up my nerve and enrolled in a free English class for non-native English speakers in an educational center in my neighborhood.…

When I entered high school, I hoped to make a name for myself as the girl who did not tolerate prejudice. Since I grew up with lesbian moms, I was born into an opportunity to educate those around me about the repercussions of intolerant language and actions, and I had decided that I was not going to waste the chance to make a difference. My school accepts students from all around the county who come from different backgrounds, so my work was cut out for me. I made friends with kids who all held a variety of beliefs, and always took the opportunity to let them know if something they said was hurtful. I never tried to speak my mind in an assaulting way, but merely informed them that, sometimes, certain vocabulary should be off limits, especially slurs.…
