Personal Narrative: The State A Golf Tournament

Improved Essays
As an eighth grader on a sports team, I was one of the youngest players on the golf team and there were a lot of high hopes for me because I had been golfing ever since I was very young. The previous year, there were many seniors that graduated and I actually made the varsity team. There are a total of five players from each school that make it to the the State Tournament if they qualify as a team. All season, I was the number five golfer which meant that I could be replaced at any time if I started to struggle. Knowing this scared me a lot because I wanted to impress the older golfers and I didn't want to let them down. This added pressure, on the other hand, made me want to practice all the time in order to improve myself and contribute to the team as much as possible. I would stay late after practice, tag along with the older golfers and play with them, and I would also ask the local …show more content…
I immediately knew what I had to do. I had to work harder than ever in order to make it to the biggest tournament in the state. The State A Golf Tournament. Although I had proven myself as being one the the better golfers on the team, there were always players that were older than me that despised me being on the varsity team. As the State Tournament approached, there was a senior that wasn't quite as good as me but always put up a good challenge. A couple weeks before the tournament, he texted me wondering if he could take my spot to State and I didn't want to be mean to him because I knew that he was older and much bigger than I was. In response to his text, I told him to ask coach because I knew the coach had my back and wouldn't let anyone take the spot that I deserved. I felt bad not letting him go because I knew it was his last year and he wanted to live it to the fullest, but I also knew that I had a better chance at helping the

The game of golf is almost more mental than it is physical. Having the ability to control one’s thoughts and emotions can turn good players into great ones. Many players learn how to play the game physically, but cannot ever make a leap towards better golf due to their actions and thoughts on the course. When playing bad, all it may take is a change in mindset or attitude to get one back on track. Sometimes it’s a little change in swing thought that will turn one’s round around.…

It was like, it was only me and the golf course and another day at the office. Before we headed out Mr. Hill huddled us in a circle and gave us three seniors, Morgan, Gabby, and myself an emotional speech telling us, “No matter what, I just want you guys to have fun and even if you do bad, know that I know you tried your best.” Which made us burst into tears like the Niagra falls. I started off great and made my big numbers from yesterday small and my small numbers even smaller. Cutting to the chase, I defeated my girl by seven, giving me hope that we had a chance because I knew Morgan could get the other four strokes easily and Gabby could get one or two, and still have plenty of strokes left over.…

The experience that I went through and that I would like to share was when I played golf in the beginning of the year. I was fine managing my schedule during the first week or two of school, but then I started getting more and more homework as the weeks went on. I had a hard time keeping up with my school work and playing golf. I practiced every day after school and I didn’t really have any time after school to do my homework. Playing golf took up basically all of my time because I played it 5-7 days a week between practicing with the school team or practicing with my golf instructor/coach.…

I spent over twenty-three years as an employee of McNary Golf Club. In that time there were a lot of ups and until a few years ago, only a few downs. In the last few years I learned some very discouraging lessons about loyalty and that it was not a two way street. With the help of of a handful of classes I took at George Fox University in the Adult Degree Program, I was able to dig deep and make one of the most difficult decisions of my life; to leave the only job I have known my entire adult life.…

In order to improve my life in the future, I want to break the school scoring average. This goal can improve my life by making me feel better about myself by giving me more confidence, not only in golf but also in school or other activities. Due to having more confidence, in the future I can relate back to when I achieved one of my hardest goals which will remind me to never stop trying. When I shot one of the best rounds in school history, my confidence rose greatly and I carried that confidence all the way to the end of the season. At the end of that season I accomplished my goal of breaking the freshmen scoring average.…

It was Christmas night and I had still not packed a single item of clothing into my suitcase. Instead, I was too excited about all of my new gifts I received and anxious about my KSA Holiday Basketball Tournament in Orlando, Florida. Finally, I returned home from all of my Christmas festivities and began to unpack all of my fresh clothing and repack all of the items into my suitcase. My house was like the mall on Black Friday, my parents and I were running around frantically trying to remember what was packed and what was not packed. After we were certain we had everything we needed for the week in Florida, we tried to get some sleep before we embarked on the ten hour van ride we had ahead of us.…

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” One of the biggest setbacks and failures I had faced in my life was during my high school volleyball season of junior year. The kickoff of the season was quite simple: go to practice, earn a spot to start, and play hard. After I had succeeded in earning a spot on the varsity team I actually started as a bench player thus I didn’t earn the spot to start on the court. However, at our first tournament, one our starters, Tyler, had injured himself and so I was the next in line to take his spot.…

So here I was with our basketball team; It was the second round of the playoffs and our team had a tough matchup against Antioch, they are just as good if not better than us. And the game had just started; myself, “the captain”, Josh, Murry, Blake, Andrew, “the starters” “we were going to win this game” is what we all said throughout the whole day before the game. And our team, Hermitage, we were not the best basketball team in the league by any means. In fact, we had the second worst record (Win to loss record) that season we only made it into the playoffs because our league needed the top eight teams in the league and we were the ninth but one team did not have enough players to play in the game. So we got in…
