Personal Narrative: The Stamp Act

Improved Essays
It is a brisk autumn day and a breeze rustles my hair. I am walking to the shoe shop on Baker Street with my father and mother, my skirt stiff in the wind. I can hear my father's words beside me. The Stamp Act again. I hate the topic. Why waste gossip time on taxes? I focus on my father’s words anyway. “The King thinks that we can be his pocket book like we aren’t people with our own problems. I don’t believe in the soldiers being here! They do nothing, NOTHING! Who does he think he is? He can’t just make us pay for every single sliver of paper, especially since we can only pay it with expensive British currency, not colonial! Doesn’t he realize that we sweat and bleed more than anyone in England to keep a roof over our head and food on our table? We shouldn’t be taxed for British wars and soldiers when our voices aren't even heard. The British must be taken down and I will be sure it happens or die trying!” Both my mother and I stay quiet, afraid that he will lash out at us if we speak.
When we get home the wind has died down and my father goes out to the garden to pull weeds. Away from my father, my mother and I speak of the Stamp Act. My mother comments, “I just hate the way tax collectors are being assaulted, even killed! Even Mr.

We may have to work harder for our money, but the taxes we pay on paper aren’t high and they help the British pay off the debts they accumulated protecting US! FOR SEVEN YEARS! We are the reason they are in debt and the least we can do is help them out a bit.” I yelled. He is always the one who gets the unnecessary luxuries and I am the one washing the floor he walks on, mending and cleaning the coat keeping him warm, and feeding him food I cooked from plates I washed. I should get my own unnecessary luxury every once in awhile! Sure, it requires buying stamps, but if I am ever going to be satisfied with my own life I will have to stop taking care of my demanding family every so often and care for myself a

This shows that life in the colonies was especially cruel and hard for many Americans; they were being taxed highly because of the 7 year war that had just occurred. Since the war ended up costing Britain a lot of money they figured best way to regain their spending would be to pass the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act forced the colonist to use British stamped paper if they wanted to print anything such as legal documents, newspapers, or magazines. They colonist were not able to pay for this with their own state currency either, they had to use British currency for this procedure. If the American economy was booming they would probably have been able to pay this without much problem, but since the war it made everything much harsher.…

It all started in the month of March in 1765 in the town of Boston, Massachusetts at the time of when the Stamp Act was in full effect. My name is Ferdinand Taylor I am twelve and the Stamp Act is in a full scale riot. In Boston yesterday the colonists started to burn all the stamps they could find in the streets to protest against the British. A lawyer by the name of James Otis argued that we shouldn’t be taxed from the Parliament because we didn’t get to vote for the Parliament members so we shouldn’t get taxed. He then made a saying called “Taxation without representation is tyranny”.…

This made the colonists even more upset. The Britians even had an official stamp which would go on the paper to show that the person who purchased it had payed the tax. “First, we all need to agree on one thing,” said Jack Hilory, “No matter what happens, we will stick together and refuse to pay the tax.” The colonists agreed and decided to meet up the next day to figure out a plan.…

Take the Quartering Act for example. Instead of going to their own houses, the British soldiers went to the colonist homes’, which meant they would use up all of their supplies and use their food. For instance in the text it states, “The Quartering Act: required colonists to pay for the housing of British soldiers”. They not only we forced to supply the soldiers but they were forced to have them sleep wherever they want in their homes, like their beds or couches for instance. Also, the British government made them pay an unreasonable amount of taxes, so when they recruit the soldiers they have to provide for them which means they must pay the additional taxes.…

The British colonist helped Great Britain fight towards their victory. The war left Great Britain in a monstrous debt. Great Britain could not handle the amount of debt racked up by the war, so it was passed onto the colonists through taxes. Today is March 22nd 1765, the British Government has made the Stamp act. This is a law where all American colonist have to pay a tax on EVERY printed piece of paper they used. I wouldn't care if the tax was for something important or for a good cause, but this was to be used to pay the costs of the defending and protecting the American Frontier near the Appalachian mountains. I do not understand why we have to help the British pay for their problems. I have to take money out of my own pocket just to help them.…

British Funds experience a dramatic shortage, so Parliament was forced to place taxes on the colonists to offset the accrued war expenses. By taxing anyone who was neglected during the seven years’ war the British funds could add to their empire thus by strengthening it more. One of the most well known causes of the American Revolution was the taxation of the colonies without either their consent or representation in Great British Parliament. Not only the taxation, but also the audacity the Americans felt the British had to assert their power is generally seen as a cause to war. The Concordians felt as if “the law was more than a raid on property: it robbed Americans of their basic rights… Since Americans were not represented in Parliament, the stamp duty was plainly unconstitutional.” (35).…
