Personal Narrative: The Sport Of Softball

Decent Essays
There is something so unexplanatory about the game of softball. The way you can almost immediately smell the freshly cut grass. The way the leather of your glove perfectly matches your hand. That feeling just as you take the field before the biggest game of the season. That is what has shaped me into the person I am today. This game will humble you when you are feeling high. It makes you appreciate the satisfaction of a win, after knowing all your hard work has paid off. But on the other hand, you also understand the sting of a hard loss. Softball has taught me tremendously. The point in time when I realized softball was more that just hitting a ball with a bat. It was about learning and growing, sharing in achievements, and building friendships.

Baseball: the sport where you stand around for 20 minutes and move 3 feet to the left and move 3 feet to the right. It’s so intense. The only time it’s actually fun is when you’re annihilating the other team while they’re asleep on the field.…

Like all little kids, I just wanted to get to feel the thrill of getting a hit and running around all of the bases to make it home. At six years old not only was I new to the sport of softball, but also to the girls that were signed up for the team. Prior to living in Brasher Falls and playing softball in North Lawrence, my family lived in Bombay. I have always been very talkative, sociable, and bold, so making friends with the other girls was not an issue for me. Some of the girls that I became friends with through coach pitch and first-sixth grade softball ended up being my teammates while playing basketball and softball all throughout high school.…

My dad, uncle, aunt, and a couple of family friends did softball at Alpha Park once a week in the afternoon. My cousin, Jordan, would always be there. During the games, we would play “house” or “the invisible game” or we would simply walk around wanting to pet all the dogs. On some occasions, although rare, my cousin, Brandon, would take Jordan and I to the playground equipment. On this day, Jordan and I were probably playing one of our usual games.…

Sixty miles per hour is the speed at which the average softball player throws the ball; so I guess you could say I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I believe I was exactly where I was supposed to be. You know how some people say there was a certain moment that changed their life completely? Well, this was that moment for me, and it all was caused by a miscommunication. Miscommunications happen all of the time, but with a softball that isn't actually soft, and someone standing only 30 feet away from you; well you can already see the implications. At the time, I didn't see what was going to unfold, but I had a bad feeling about what was to come.…
