The game of golf is almost more mental than it is physical. Having the ability to control one’s thoughts and emotions can turn good players into great ones. Many players learn how to play the game physically, but cannot ever make a leap towards better golf due to their actions and thoughts on the course. When playing bad, all it may take is a change in mindset or attitude to get one back on track. Sometimes it’s a little change in swing thought that will turn one’s round around.…
One morning I was chilling in my golf cart. I thought I saw something from a distance, something little. I waited for a minute and it got bigger. It looked like a white fur ball. Finally it got close enough for me to see it … it was a mean little dog.…
Seeing my peers play tennis got me interested to join and although I was mediocre at first, I improved by applying my coach and friends’ advice. There were times I wanted to quit because I plateaued, but I stayed. I fell in love with my team because I finally found my place of belonging. I could not let my family down after all of their encouragement. After several practices filled with sweat and pain, I made it to varsity.…
However, none of them met my goal of a par-level nine holes. The par for the front nine is thirty-five strokes. The closest I had come was a +2 thirty-seven. I could taste the happiness and relief, and I knew it was something within the realm of accomplishment. At the same time, it still seems to be unattainable.…
I reflected on my attempts and realized this was a turning point. I know what I’ve accomplished and I know that the player that I am during this slump is not an accurate portrayal of the player I really am. The whole “slump” has been more bad luck then myself being a bad player. With that in mind, I decided to change my attitude considering that I know I am a strong player and know I have to start believing that I am. Evidently, all it took was one hit and the hit became contagious and came in bunches.…
I am currently a baseball player for Lower Columbia College where I am also pursuing a general education AA with the expectation of transferring to a four-year college or university in fall of 2016. I signed with the Red Devils in 2014 while still in high school, receiving a scholarship to play for them during my college freshman and sophomore years. Although I originally planned on majoring in education to teach math and science at the middle and high school levels, my interests have shifted to focus on sports therapy/physical therapy due to my involvement in sports. I have been playing baseball since I was seven (7) years old, dedicating a large percentage of my time and energy to be the best player possible. Because I was always on the…
The Big Game! We were talking, stretching, and listening to our warm up playlist. After about fifteen minutes goofing around, it was time to get serious. We all sat down on our dugout bench.…
Football game It was the third game of the season. We were playing Zeeland on the varsity football field. We warmed up on the 45 yard line. My team started with stretches then moved on to sprints, bearcrwals, all the warmups. Sawyer, Preston, and I were chosen to be in the coin toss.…
I was at the baseball field and it was a tuesday that night. It was cloudy with a chance of rain. I was in the dugout out and we just got done with taking grounder.…
I was standing by myself on the bright green tennis court, gripping my racket. Groups of other tennis players were leaning against the chain link fence, waiting, like me, for tryouts to begin. Listening intently to the conversation going on around me, I was trying to get absorbed into what was going on. After what felt like forever, but in reality was only minutes a friend of mine and returning player walked over to me. Having not seen each other in a month or so we both greeted each other enthusiastically.…
Coming Up to the Tee The aroma of freshly cut grass fills my nose as I step up to the tee. I swing my club back slowly, blocking out the millions of thoughts running through my mind. Swiftly, I swing down at the ball propelling it forward, straight towards the fairway. Clubs in tow, I head towards my ball as I begin my round of golf.…
As an eighth grader on a sports team, I was one of the youngest players on the golf team and there were a lot of high hopes for me because I had been golfing ever since I was very young. The previous year, there were many seniors that graduated and I actually made the varsity team. There are a total of five players from each school that make it to the the State Tournament if they qualify as a team. All season, I was the number five golfer which meant that I could be replaced at any time if I started to struggle. Knowing this scared me a lot because I wanted to impress the older golfers and I didn't want to let them down.…
I found myself in a predicament during my junior year baseball season. I was the starting shortstop. One early May day our coach decided to bench his best player and start his backup. Consequently, we lost the game I waited to have a one-on-one talk with my coach.…
I was playing lacrosse on a warm spring day in Glen Ellyn. I could feel my adrenaline spike, accompanied by my heart beating out of my chest. We finally had the ball on our side. The first place team that happened to be our school’s arch nemesis, had selfishly kept the ball to themselves so far. Every second we had possession was precious as we knew the opportunities to score would be few.…
A block plan that I would develop would incorporate my love of sports and my intended major of economics. For my three and a half week course, I would run a class titled Sports and Economics. I would break down the course by studying the early years of the NFL in week one which were 1920-1934, the middle years which go from 1935- 1970, and finally the present years which go from 1971- until now. In week one, I would cover the creation of the NFL and the financial impact it had on the economy during the time period. I would discuss the cost to attend a game in the 1920s, the startup costs to run a team, and the media marketability of each team.…
