Personal Narrative: The Sport Of Cheerleading

heerleading, one of the most difficult and exhilarating sports you can participate in or watch on ESPN. I have been cheering basically my whole life being eighteen years old and cheering for nine years. Having been a cheerleader for so long, I always encounter people who do not believe cheerleading is an actual sport. Every time I try and convince someone that it is a sport, they are so one minded and they hardly listen to me and it blows my mind. Second semester, sophomore year of high school one boy, we will call him John, decided to tell me that cheerleading was not a sport. I was then very irritated.

I was walking around the hallways in my cheer uniform as I did every Friday for the upcoming game later in the day. Once I walked into class John asked “Why do the

Practice is everyday after school for two and a half hours, yes it is not the three to four hours that football does, but it is still a while. I also asked him if he was aware was quick to inform him that cheer is listed as one of the top sports that has the most severe injuries every year. I restrained most of my anger and sarcastic comments but I was constantly hinting out to him that he had upset me. John was just looking at me. He was not laughing but he also was not looking confused in any way, he just had a blank staring look on his face. The next thing I decided to ask him was if he had ever watched The Cheerleading World Championships that air on ESPN every year, collegiate level or competitive level cheer. John said no because he had no idea cheerleading even aired on ESPN. I already knew the answer to that question, but he looked stunned because how could an activity that ‘is not a sport’ be aired on the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network? John looked awfully confused, but then proceeded to say under his breath that he would now begin to look at cheerleading as a
