On May 16, 2017 I interviewed Peter Santana about what it means to be American to him. He is my cousin's best friend, and is currently 31 years of age. He lives in Buena Park, California and is manager of the Providence Building in Orange, California. He does not like playing, or watching sports, he would rather go out and take a hike or drive around town in his 2017 Nissan Altima.…
Steve wished to go to Europe all his life and it's finally coming true. His grandfather had died leaving 7 envelopes 1 for each grandson. Steve was assigned the journey to go to Spain. On page 26 it says how His GRANDFATHER WANTS HIM TO recapture the time of importance, danger, love and a sense of being a part of something that would change the world. He was passed on a key, a postcard, a photograph of his grandfather when he was young with a mysterious girl, an address in Spain and several lines of a poem.…
On September 15, I went and took part in el Grito ceremony held at the Miller Outdoor Theater to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. I did not know what was el Grito, so I went to that event with an open mind. The show came after a long speech in both Spanish and English about the Mexican community in Houston and the impact of Harvey on the community. I really enjoy the sense of community that I experienced during that event. People came as a family or with a group of friends.…
I have not been thinking differently but I am surely endeavoring. I have an arduous time changing things about myself so at this point I am just gradually endeavoring. After reading these two chapters I endeavor to disunite my emotions from my thinking due to the fact that they incline to get me into an abundance of trouble. Prior to making decisions, I stop and notice first if I am allowing my emotions to get in the way. I ascertain no emotions are tied to my decisions just so at the end I get a good outcome.…
In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…
Then he leaped for out into the sea... Rainsford tried and tried to swim away from this horrible island. The raging waters of the sea splashed in his face. The salt from the water stings like a bee in his wounds. His stomach rumbles like thunder.…
My Culture I am a mix of two cultures. I am half Mexican and half American. Even though I am half Mexican, my spanish isn’t good. I can’t speak spanish fluently and I tend to strudder a lot. My spelling is pretty bad too.…
My ethnicity is Mexican. We speak Spanish, but there are also people who might speak indigenous languages. In Mexico, the dominant religion is Catholic. However, some people practice different religions such as Christians. I identify myself as Catholic and a believer of the Virgin of Guadalupe.…
Though I am grateful for my midwestern upbringing, I cannot deny the pushes and pulls of the heritage that propels me to look beyond Milwaukee. Every year my family has two Thanksgivings. We have, what you could call, the “traditional” American Thanksgiving then we do it all again the “Dominican way”. This tradition is something that represents both parts of my ethnicity really well. My mother is from the west coast and was brought up in a very traditional European manner.…
This March, my family and I took a trip to Mexico for vacation. We did many fun things down there such as; parasailing, went on a boat for a day trip, sail boating, went swimming in the ocean, buggy board, sand volleyball, swam in the pool, walked the beach at night, got henna tattoos, a dread in our hair and went to the club with my brother and Emerson. The sand on my feet, the crashing of the waves, people swimming in the ocean, the smell of sunscreen and the wonderful taste of my flamingo drink; Mexico is my kind of place to be. But the first day in particular sticks out to me the most, the day we went parasailing and sail boating. Waking up in the morning in your soft hotel comforter, gives you a great feeling.…
Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…
A tradition in my family on thanksgiving, new years and Christmas eve would be my dad cooking pork for the family to eat. The recipe was taught to him by my paternal grandfather. Being Hispanic is a topic that comes up everyday of my life. For example, in scholarship applications, college applications, AP exam days. The questions is always there, “Are you Hispanic/Latino?”…
You know me as a raisin, but this is not who I have always been. I was born quite some time ago as a red seedless grape. Like so many other grapes, my home was California. I grew on a vine in the San Joaquin Valley.…
Oranges Ending We were walking out of the drugstore saying to myself, “I need to pay the lady back, she saved my life.” It was only us on the street. Then suddenly we heard sirens as loud as a screech of a banshee.…
As a child, I always expressed joy when we passed the seemingly giant factory located on the edge of my hometown. It was always a happy experience to witness the factory that produced the clouds for the sky. My eyes were met with wonderment when I say the giant white, billowing clouds produced from the smokestacks of the towering, majestic factory. However, I was always met with concern when the clouds weren’t coming out, and I deeply hoped the clouds would resume soon. I always nagged my parents about the factory, and would interrogate them thoroughly when the clouds stopped billowing out of the stacks.…
