Personal Narrative: The Source Of One Saturday Day

The gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. Also known as your calf. This is the source of a fateful moment one Saturday night in 2014, one of the most confusing and terrifying moments I have ever lived through. The night half of my family laughed at me while I begged to go to the hospital.

I was 12 years old. My mother, my older brother, Jalen, and I were watching Saturday Night Live. On the couch, wrapped in a throw blanket, everything was fine. I was cackling like a hyena at the last skit before the commercial break. Suddenly, as a commercial for an F-150 came on, I felt a painful knot being tied in my calf. I thought I needed serious medical care. I wondered if I could even last the 10 minute car ride to Summa Urgent Care. I doubted it. I

Otherwise, I’m going to start locking my doors at night. But what made this moment so terrifying to me was the fact that I was laughing too. I was rolling around, laughing, and almost crying while trying to find the reason for the pain. And this storm of misery wouldn’t go away. It was as if Hercules himself was holding it in place, pulling it tighter and tighter. This Gordian Knot in my calf was killing my soul. To this day, the confusion, terror, pain, and leftover laughter combined with the dark room and bright colors from the screen, and the soft, tickling material of the rug make up one of the craziest moments of my life. I rolled and floundered around on the floor for a bit longer before my mother and brother decided to take mercy on me and tell me what was going on. A Charlie Horse. Something as common as a Charlie Horse, that’s all this moment was. My mother told me to stretch my leg and keep it extended at all times. At this point, my father and younger brother, Xander, emerged from the basement. Jalen and my mother, being the incredibly nice and wonderful people that they are, told them in tears of laughter what had happened to me. Then Xander and my father began to laugh at me. I was not laughing at this point. The pain started to subside. The crazy 5 minutes were over. Saturday Night Live came back on

Day two. Written with a thin black marker on a minuscule white board in awkward large letters that signify the number of days 54 year old James M. Conis has sat on Court Square behind a plastic folding table that hung a sign that screamed “ELDER EXPLOITATION HUNGER STRIKE” in huge block letters. He was such a peculiar man, not your average protester. He was stout, yet looked respectable, wearing a starched white button up, black trousers, a gold watch, and a checkered newsboy hat. A woman with salt and pepper hair approached him cautiously, measuring his amount of sanity up and down with her eyes.…

It had been months since there had been any significant rain in Oklahoma. There was dust everywhere. On the sheets, in our food, and covering every establishment in sight. Although this had been the daily condition for a long time, nothing could have prepared me for what happened the day of Sunday, April 14, 1935. Conditions had been getting really bad in Scherville, the town I lived in.…

It was a scorching summer afternoon around three o’ clock PM at J.D Redd Park. I was anxiously waiting in third base for the batter to approach the plate and smack the yarn covered ball just enough for me to make it to the home plate. As the sun hits my face I see the pitcher retract his right arm getting ready to throw it. As I see the ball leave the pitcher’s hand, I breathed in the humid air, making preparations to sprint as fast as I could and make it to the home plate. Before I could even gather my thoughts the ball departed from the pitcher’s hand and into the bat of one of the members of my team.…

The Sunday after Thanksgiving, I rather spontaneously---or perhaps, I’d like to think, by the work of the Holy Spirit---got on a night bus and went to church. I arrived at St. Mark’s Cathedral to a contemplative Eucharist in their beautiful chapel. It was soft and lovely and quiet. I love the quiet. I sought it out when I came to college in Seattle, living in “the big city” for the first time this fall, more than a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of people everywhere.…

True pain is hard to find and probably easy to experience. When I look at the paper planes soaring through the room, my pain seems to subside. It’s strange how such a little thing could have such a large impact on my life–my emotions, my physical state. The soft plush of my duvet under my body wasn’t as calming as staring at the paper planes, but I find it soothing in the state of being knackered. Which is one of the things I can’t possibly be right now especially with my mental state.…

The hospital was fifteen miles away and I closed my eyes to forget about the awfully long time it was taking to get there. Suddenly, tears sprang to my eyes as a searing pain hit me straight in the abdomen.
