Personal Narrative: The Softball Team

It was a warm April afternoon. Everyone on the softball team was dismissed at 9th period (2:15 p.m.). We waited for our bus to come and take us to Upper Perk. When everyone loaded the bus, you can smell confidence in the air.

Since I was co-captain and our captain was out with a concussion, I was leader and led the team out to right field for stretching. While we were warming-up, Upper Perk’s team walked out. As soon as they started to stretch, the teams started to have a “which team is the loudest” contest. I stopped us and we started to throw the ball around.

I was practicing grounders and pop-flies since I play infield, third baseman. 20 minutes later we went to the ump. and listened to the rules. We then started the game. As I was getting a helmet and my bat, I was watching the pitcher to see how see pitches. I walked up to the left-side batting box since I am left-handed. When the pitcher pitched the softball I swung and hit a double straight down between third baseman and shortman. That got my team pumped up and

In August of 1992, Rake’s team had a Sunday morning practice of all conditioning after a bad scrimmage the day before. Two miles was their “warm-up.” Then, the team ran bleachers, a workout dreaded by all Spartans. It was so dreaded that “when Rake yelled Bleachers, half the team wanted to quit” (Grisham 75). During the workout, sophomore Scotty Reardon collapsed on the bleachers “and never regained consciousness” (Grisham 76).…

Baseball: the sport where you stand around for 20 minutes and move 3 feet to the left and move 3 feet to the right. It’s so intense. It’s so intense that you could take a nap on the field with everything out there. Of course, I’m being sarcastic. The only time it’s actually fun is when you’re annihilating the other team while they’re asleep on the field.…

I said in a bratty voice. I stepped out of the imaginary batter's box took a few deep breaths, tightened my batting gloves, and then stepped back into the batter’s box, thinking about finally getting a good cut. I started my cut keeping my head down swinging at just the right speed, I made perfect contact and the ball when flying straight back to the end of the cage, or at least it would of!…

One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…

As I get off the bus, and stretch my legs after what seemed like a very long bus ride, I noticed a certain smell in the air. I have been here before, and each time the visits have been very uncomfortable. I love nothing more than to step on the ball field, and smell the fresh cut grass, and my kangaroo skin catchers glove. This ball field was different, for many different reasons. Playing baseball against Mountain Valley was always fun, because we always won.…

Sixty miles per hour is the speed at which the average softball player throws the ball; so I guess you could say I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I believe I was exactly where I was supposed to be. You know how some people say there was a certain moment that changed their life completely? Well, this was that moment for me, and it all was caused by a miscommunication. Miscommunications happen all of the time, but with a softball that isn't actually soft, and someone standing only 30 feet away from you; well you can already see the implications. At the time, I didn't see what was going to unfold, but I had a bad feeling about what was to come.…

When I was 16 years old I changed summer traveling softball teams to make myself better so that I could play softball in college. The five A.M. wake ups, the long, midnight drives home, and the early Sunday practices are all worth it. Throughout my twelve years of experience, I have made countless sacrifices for softball but they have all been worth it because of the way the game has influenced me as a person and my life overall.
