Personal Narrative: The Social Norm

Decent Essays
The social norm that I violated was singing out loud on a public place. Well I did not really get to sing loudly on a bus or train. I did however sing loudly while I was shopping in Wal-Mart. I thought it was the next best thing than singing on a bus or something. Since there are tons of people at Wal-Mart in the first place.

Before going to Wal-Mart I was very nervous and scared of the reactions I was going to get. At first, I really did not want to do it all together. I sucked up my pride and decided to do it anyway. When I arrived I went with my cousin since she needed a few things from there. I informed her of what I was going to do just in case she said something to me. Walking into Wal-Mart my nerves were at all-time high. As we began walking around I really did not start automatically I waited a few minutes since I was so nervous. I am a shy person so when it came to singing out loud I really did not know what to expect.

I sang along to the music they had playing in the store instead of bringing my own music. Since I thought it would be better. My cousin even started singing along with me to kind of ease me being nervous and scared. Most people looked at me with a look like what is she doing or trying to figure out what was going on. Though there was some people did not even look at me all together. They just kept on shopping and moving on like I was not even there.

Through throughout the whole experience I was nervous and scared I really had fun while singing out loud publically. Just the people reaction was astonishing to me because not many people looked at me weird. I am guessing they probably worse or something. I would like to do this again just probably with

The setting I observed was Walmart. I decided to go here because there are usually a large amount of people and a lot of different backgrounds with different personalities. The social setting of Walmart would be the lower and middle class income families. The expectations of this environment would be to be completely clothed with shoes. Most people would expect for others to just look presentable because there are young children and elderly old-fashioned folks.…

For the pseudostuttering activity, my partner and I, Courtney, went to the mall one afternoon. We chose the mall since it is a typical place for someone to go, and a place where retail workers are used to interacting with people and getting questions asked like, “where can I find X?” and “how much is Y?” The first place I started out at was Dillards, where I asked a retail worker where the dresses were.…

Deviating from Social Norms During our last class meeting, I participated in a group project that actually helped explain what deviating from social norms was. We rang cowbells, yelled, and cheered on campus as if we were at a football game. From this we can tell that obviously, this activity is different from the usual walk to class and quietness that is found on a college campus.…

I have never really been a very outgoing person but, I do love doing something nice for people. For this pro-social experiment, I thought that I would try to do something for the many homeless people that I see on a daily basis. I decided that I would go around to some of the people that I see around the Wal-mart area and around and bring them food just something small, a gesture of kindness. For me this was going to be awkward I do not like talking to people let alone people that I do not know.…

“Line up at the piano if you are going to audition,” Mr. Rosser said to the choir. I wanted this solo more than anyone. It would be more than just a few bars of basic Latin to me: it was my chance. Rosser had been picking me out of the crowd of over a hundred and twenty girls from the beginning, but not for any talent I possessed. I was always looking down, not speaking, my hair was over my eyes, and I didn’t talk at all, let alone to a full choir.…

Art with a Taste of Wine I had not pictured myself in front of a blank canvas with a palette of paint beside me. All of the other women in attendance were regulars at this white wine affair.
